Top Down versus Bottom Up

Since this is homecoming weekend, I am going to make this short and sweet. You need to make two arguments, one should be deductive, one should be inductive. Use this link or your book to figure out what these mean and how to design an argument so that it is deductive or inductive. Label your arguments A. and B.

Inductive and Deductive Reasoning

When commenting, choose a classmate and try to guess which statement is deductive and which is inductive.

  1. A. The soccer team has played Coudersport twice this year. Both times the game was within a goal, but ECC still lost. They say the hardest achievement in sports is beating a team three times in row. So, ECC will have a good chance of beating Coudersport next time they play each other.
    B. To write a rhetorical argument, an author is needed. An argument has been written, therefore an author wrote the argument.

    3. Your first syllogism is inductive because it comes to a logical conclusion without eliminating a variable. The second syllogism is deductive because it eliminates the variable as to whether or not there is an author. Your deductive statement could be improved by adding more descriptive words before "argument" and add evidence as to why it has to be an author because anyone can write a rhetorical argument, it's just a matter of how good the argument is.
