Epideictic Rhetoric

Write a 250-500 word tribute. It can be for a favorite historical figure or almost anything else, a book, a pet, or even a special pair of sneakers! Choosing friends or loved ones is unadvised as it is too raw for the classroom. It is best to stick with something less near and dear.

https://www.write-out-loud.com/tribute-speech.html  This can offer you some  help, but we are being a little more creative than this. It might be helpful, however, if you don't know where to start.

When commenting, be sure that you do not simply tell the writer they did a "good job". We need to move beyond that and into real criticism, (not to be confused with criticizing in only negative ways). You need to offer a critique. Speak intelligently is regards to their choice of diction and syntax. Comment on the writers ability to make the piece beautiful. Did he or she establish ethos? Did he or she appeal to pathos and logos? Your post is worth 10 points and each comment is worth 5. Make sure you think about your comments.

Notice the virtues that you are praising. Are they culturally defined, or are they virtues per se? Why are you praising them? Are they virtues that are in jeopardy? Would it make sense to praise virtues that are perfectly established, that there is no doubt about? Pay attention to that as you compose your tribute!

  1. A man, despite the odds against him, began something bigger than himself, something bigger than everyone. A man who was born into a minority family. A man who grew up in Atlanta, Georgia when the South was full of racism. A man who was so intelligent that he skipped both ninth and eleventh grade. A man who went to college at the age of fifteen to graduate with a degree in sociology, who then turned around and went into the seminary. A man who began his legacy during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. A man now referred to as the most influential civil rights leaders, Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr., originally born Michael King Jr., was born into a conservative pastor's home who was facing racial discrimination, which became very apparent to the young King Jr. King ultimately decided to combat the racism by excelling in his studies eventually skipping ninth and eleventh grade and going to college at the age fifteen. He graduated with a degree in sociology soon after and decided to enter the Crozer Theological Seminary and get his doctorate in theology. Soon after he achieved his doctorate he began his social activism within the United States.
King was a dedicated student who studied Mahatma Ghandi's theory of non-violent activism, which was reflected in King's movement for equality within the United States. His activism began on December 1, 1955 when Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat for a white man and the NAACP responded by deciding to have a boycott. The leader of the NAACP at that time contacted King, a well respected man within the community at that time, so that he could lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott for three hundred eighty-two days until the city of Montgomery removed the laws enforcing public segregation. From then on he encouraged African Americans to participate in sit-ins and other non violent forms of protest in order to achieve civil rights through peaceful activism. He went on to participate in racial issues in Birmingham, which resulted in him being arrested and writing the "Letters from the Birmingham Jail," and him writing his "I have a Dream" speech. This all came to an end when a hateful man named James Earl Ray brought this activist's life to an end with a bullet from a sniper rifle.
Lost but never forgotten, Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy will forever stand as one of the most influential civil rights activists during that era. Contributing to rights, policies, and acts that guaranteed racial minorities the same opportunity as Caucasians, the same rights that are in place today that helped minorities gather and strengthen one another in order to get to where they are today. His legacy will forever live on and that is why Martin Luther King Jr. Day is remembered to this day.

  2. To Kill a Mokingbird, Charlotte’s Web, The Great Gatsby, Frankenstein; what do these books have in common? The following books were on the top one hundred most notable books of all time, according to the New York Times. With that being said, it can be inferred that many individuals around the world have heard of these incredible books. Although these books are undeniably exceptional, there is another book that deserves to have a place on the list of the top one hundred most notable books of all time.

The Tale of Despereaux, written by Kate DiCamillo is a charming novel that includes adventure, hardships, and drama. Throughout the story DiCamillo discuses an interesting battle between the forces of light and darkness. Interestingly, the novel is separated into four “books.” Each “book” tells the story from a different characters perspective, with the different “books” combining at the end.

DiCamillo addresses the reader continuously throughout the novel, making it possible for the reader to address their own opinions and concerns while the story is being unraveled. Also, many excellent sources of symbolism and imagery can be found within the novel. In addition, DiCamillo makes a point to discuss standards of society in fact, during each separate “book” within the novel, the main character is considered an outsider in some way.

The Tale of Despereaux must be shared with readers everywhere, this novel teaches the reader about an abundance of main idea topics that are necessary for all individuals to learn and experience. The novel is recommended for individuals ages ten and up, making the novel perfect for an assignment to children in school or for an enjoyable story to read at home. Everyone should have the opportunity to appreciate DiCamillo’s Newbery Medal-winning novel and it should therefore be accredited it’s proper recognition by eventually being placed on the list of the top one hundred most notable books of all time.

    1. I never read the tale of Despereaux, but I did read other works by DiCamillo, most notably, Because of Winn-Dixie, so I am familiar with her writing. I do with you would touch upon what these “main idea topics” are. Is it about outsiders? But, I think your idea was great and inspired my blog post so thanks!

  4. Voooooooooom! Fast out like lightning. I can’t be stopped and no one will ever catch me. At least it felt that way with my first car, Volty. Volty was is a white 2013 Chevy Volt and is she ever so beautiful. My Volty was my everything she got me places in life. I would not be the person I am today without her.
She is the top of the line car and one of the first with an electric battery as it’s engine. We have been through everything together. She plays me all my favorite music and gets me ready for my theatrical performances at school by playing all my songs. Her beautiful white color matched my beautiful dates dress to my high school dances.
Volty was kept me safe when I slide on the ice. She has help me learn how to drive and sometimes even keeps me going with her good old buddy cruise control. My girl, Volty, is one of the best things that has ever happened to me and she barely asks for anything in return. The few things she does request like Letting her charge at night, washing her, changing her oil every month are so simple. I enjoy filling her needs because it gives us an even greater bond. Volty is strong and caring and for that I hope I will never leave her side. She holds me together and is the reason I am the man I am today. Volty if you ever read this I hope you will realize how much I truly love you.

It is clear here that you have a strong basis for your thoughts here and I think that shows in how well you wrote this!

  5. A man, courageous, a leader, soldier...a German general during WWII? Erwin Rommel is all of these things, and also cared about family. He was one of the best generals and tacticians of all time, but this only a small reason why he is such a good man, serving under a bad man. Rommel, or usually better known as "The Desert Fox", was a soldier and captain in WWI and a general and advisor in WWII.
Rommel was not book smart as a young adult and child, as he actually flunked out of university, but he was technically smart, as he spent his days around machines and taken machines apart. He went to serve in the army, where in WWI he served courageously. He was proficient in tactics and fought in some of the worst areas in World War One, including Verdun. He won a couple medals and ultimately went home to his wife, that is until World War Two. There he shine in a light of darkness.  Rommel wasn't a Nazi, as he didn't support the party. He treated prisoners of war extremely well compared to other German generals. He ended up plotting to kill Hilter after he understood what he stood for. He stood up to possibly the most evil man ever to live, and did it bravely. He ended up committing suicide unfortunately, as he was apart of the plan to bomb Hilter in the that failed, and if he was tried in court, his family would also have consequences against them. Because of the legal actions that could be taken against his family, he became a martyr for his family.
His hero of a man stood for something different than others did around him. He stood for something more. He stood for courage, bravery, and confidence. He was respected by even his enemies. After the war and his death, Winston Churchill even spoke highly of him, even though he gave him fits through that war. Many people saw it obvious that he was different than most in the Nazi war machine. He wasn't a Nazi, he was a German. He wasn't a mindless, brainwashed man, he was human, and treated other around him what it's like to be human.

"Be an example to your men, in your duty and in private life. Never spare yourself, and let the troops see that you don't in your endurance of fatigue and privation. Always be tactful and well-mannered and teach your subordinates to do the same. Avoid excessive sharpness or harshness of voice, which usually indicates the man who has shortcomings of his own to hide"
    -Erwin Rommel

  6. There are many movies in today’s wold, however, there is a lack of phenomenal movies. “The Godfather”, “Titanic”, “Forrest Gump”, and “The Breakfast Club” have been considered to be a few of the greatest movies; however, “The Breadwinner” needs to be added to the top of the list.
“The Breadwinner” is an extraordinary film, released in 2017, that follows the life of a small girl, Parvana, who lives in what is now know as the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in 2001 during the era of complete Taliban control. Her father was wrongfully taken by the Taliban, leaving her and her family defenseless and unable to provide for her infant brother. In order to survive, Parvana took on the role of the “breadwinner.” She dressed as a young boy, and even changed her name, in order to get odd jobs to provide for her family.
“The Breadwinner” highlights the cruel reality and raw truth that is living in the country of Afghanistan, especially as a struggling young Muslim woman. It shows the truth about how women are treated, how children are treated, and how men are treated. No one is safe, not even those in power. It shows how anyone can be taken for any reason, regardless of what is right or what is wrong. The directors of “The Breadwinner” took it in a remarkable way. Even though “The Breadwinner” is a cartoon, it does not hold back. It does not hide. It exposes everyone to the truth, and it does not allow people to look away from it.
“The Breadwinner” is beautiful in its depiction. Everything from the artwork to the direction to the score weave seamlessly into the essential narrative of the piece, but what stands out far above all is the message and the ideals that uphold it. At its core, it is a story of sacrifice and of love. A young eleven year old girl cuts off her hair, changes her name, and rejects her very self for the protection of others. Helping her friend, father, mother, sister, and little brother rests in her hands and her hands alone. She is perpetually putting her own life at risk for fear of being recognized. Her self sacrifice is brave and would be beyond trying for any person of any age or background. It shows what actual young women do to take care of those they love, and for this, I applaud the piece.
“The Breadwinner” shows the good in a young girl as she struggles to protect the lives of those she loves. She lives the Aristotelian virtues in a way many people would not even be able to imagine. Her chivalry ends up being the very force protecting her father from the slaughter of the Taliban. She perseveres to protect those she loves. “The Breadwinner” shows the strength that many young Muslim women endure to be able to overcome the haunting truth around them. There is no doubt to me, then, that this movie should be upheld as a masterpiece for its truthful, artful, beautiful, and honest depiction of sacrifice and strength in the midst of adversity. “...Afghanistan has always been the home of the bravest women in the world. You are all brave women...”

  7. Many decades have been able to be characterized by edginess and spontaneity, but nothing compares to the 1990s. A decade of drama, passion, and zest, you can imagine the incomparable novels and movies that the 90s produced. One particular 90s movie, 10 Things I Hate About You is no exception.
10 Things I Hate About You is unlike no other high school drama. It excludes the stereotypical and unrealistic expectations of every other high school staged movie of the time. This movie has genuinely comical dialogue, while remaining fresh and not overwhelming.
Adapted from “The Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare, the story has a poetic and romantic style. The movie certainly did not exclude Shakespeare’s influence, it just retells the story in a late-1900s American high school scene. In the movie, a new student Cameron, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, quickly becomes interested in the school’s “it-girl,” Bianca Stratford. However, Bianca’s father’s strict dating rules imply that she can not get involved with boys until her older, ill-tempered sister Kat starts dating, which is seemingly impossible because of her lack of interest in any sort of dating. Cameron schemes up a plan to get the school’s “bad-boy” Patrick to take his shot with Kat so that he may have a shot with his striking crush, Bianca.
The movie does an excellent job of retelling Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Not only does the story recapture the poetic elements of its origin, it also has important positive life lessons. The movie teaches the importance of making decisions for yourself, and not just because it’s what everyone else is doing. Kat teaches her sister Bianca this important lesson after Bianca has a bad experience with the same boy that previously broke Kat’s heart.
10 Things I Hate About You certainly deserves the credit and praise it has earned itself in the past ten years. It is a movie with good values and powerful messages.

  8. Who doesn’t love food? And some of the best kind of food is snack food. And my new favorite of snack foods is crackers. They have always been there and been good, but I just do not think that I have appreciated them enough. Crackers are a perfect snack; they are small, lightweight, not overly flavorful, and can go with a variety of sides. And recently, I was reminded about an amazing kind of cracker: the oyster cracker!
My mom and I were eating toasted cheese and tomato soup so she took out a bag of oyster crackers.I started munching on them. I had forgotten how great they are! They are so simple yet so divine. They are like saltines in taste, but smaller, and as a result, they are easier to eat, in my opinion, because they aren’t so dry.
And so I have started packing some everyday as a mid-Theology class snack and they have treated me quite well. They are nice and easy to throw in a container and keep them in my backpack. And one of my favorite parts is that they don’t make a mess. Some crackers are big enough that you can’t eat them in one bite, but these avoid those pesky crumbs.
Oyster crackers are great to eat plain, but they are very good in soups. Their name is believed to have come forth since they would be served with oyster stew or clam chowder. However, oyster crackers have gone beyond their shellfish past and are now something that can be eaten in any number of ways. And I believe that this is a message that goes beyond snack food. It is just in the simple things that the complex become understandable.

  9. A strong man, beaten from a young age, simply had a dream that he would fight for. People left him along the away and told him his dream of being a singer was impossible. He is now the leader of the Band, MercyMe and his song “I can only Image” is the best selling Cristian pop song of all time. He also was awarded with song of the year and song writer of the year at the Dove Awards. The man who inspires me to fight for what I believe in and work for what is “impossible” is Bart Millard. He grew up with an abusive father who suffered brain injury when ran over by a truck while at work. When he was only in third grade, his mother dropped him off at a camp for the week and told him she loved him. There he met a young lady named Shannon, who he one day marries many years later. When he returned home his mother was gone and he was left trying to make his father proud by playing football. He got injured and couldn’t play anymore so he ended up joining the glee club and later loved singing. Times were hard with his father and he eventually left and was in a band. Shannon and him took a break while Bart was fighting to live his dream. Many of the producers told him he was just not good enough. Until one day that all changed. He had to go home and make things right. He found out his father had cancer and while he was away his father was changed by God. Bart explained that God transformed a monster into someone he one day hopes to be. His father attended mass, read the Bible, and found a way to get Bart to forgive him. They spent time together becoming best friends. His father also wrote in his journals when he was away and Bart found them after he passed away. On one of the pages his father wrote, “I can only Imagine,” which Bart turned into the most heartfelt song that did make him good enough. Before his father died, he told Bart he wanted him to marry Shannon and chase his dreams and never look back. Following this Bart sang Amazing Grace as his father fell into Gods hands. He got Shannon back and married her and he believes if God can turn a monster into someone that amazing than He can turn any of us into someone full of purpose and worth. He inspires me to allow God to take me on my own path and work for my dreams.

    2. Emily, I think you did a good job describing Bart Millard’s story. However, I feel like you only described his story, you did not say why he is someone who is supposed to be payed tribute. Perhaps a more sufficient appeal to ethos, pathos, and logos would give reason for us to praise Bart Millard’s life.

  11. “READY! RED 19, RED 19! SETTTTT HUT!” the center snaps the ball to the quarterback and the next 6 seconds of my life are nothing but focus. Which reads to make about the defense, which linebackers the line in front of me are going to block, which hole to run through, and which defenders I will have to beat by myself. The quarterback hands the ball off, and now is where those reads become important. Keeping my head up, pads low, and running the ball with every ounce of energy that I have is all that matters to me throughout the duration of the play.
Since I was little, I always went to high school football games and dreamed about being the guy who gets to hold the ball and run as fast as he can, away from all the people in the different colored shirts. No, I’m clearly not the best at it, but with the help and encouragement from coaches, teammates and other close companions, I was able to fulfill a dream that I’ve had since I was young. There is no way that I would be where I am today without the support of all those who want to help me achieve my goal, just as much or even more than I, myself, do. It is with a heavy heart that I would like to thank each and every person who has helped me in fulfilling this dream of playing high school football, one of the greatest sports that the world has ever seen.
I am a strong believer in the fact that each of us has to deal with time. We all have clocks, but no hands. Not a single human knows how much time they have left on this earth to accomplish their goals and say that they are proud of something they’ve achieved. The sport of American Football, and all that has come along with it such as; coaches, teammates, stronger relationships, life lessons, and much more has all allowed me to see the remaining greatness in society. It let’s me enjoy the company of others, while at the same time allows me to work hard, and get better at something that I love.

  12. Most people have a fond love for their first car, however, I developed a love for my second car. I used to drive a red Jeep Patriot, but was forced to say goodbye once my good buddy Nick Daghir decided to hit a deer during the only time I ever let him drive my car. Little did I know that it was a blessing in disguise. My grandpa was moving to Virginia that week and wasn’t taking his old car that was stored in his garage, so he decided to give it to me as a way to remember him. The car is a 1998 Dodge Durango and it is almost a puke colored green. I know what you may be thinking, “that sounds horrible.” Actually, it is horrible but that is what makes it awesome. My friends have nicknamed it the Meat Tank, due to the fact that it is green like a tank and it can hold nine people (therefore there is a lot of meat packed in closely together). I will always love the Meat Tank and I do not ever want to lose it. However, I probably won’t have it for too much longer as it only starts in one out of about every 3 tries. Either way, I will always admire the good ole Meat Tank.

  13. A crunch beneath your feet, a cup of warm coffee in your hands, a tingling sensation on the tip of your nose, and the sound of peaceful silence. It’s finally time for winter.
With the exception of polar vortices, one of my favorite seasons is winter because I absolutely love the snow. While everyone is grumbling about the hassle and bitterly cold temperatures that the winter brings, you can find me outside, overjoyed, and looking thoroughly ridiculous while making snow angels.
The main reason I love the snow so much is because some of my favorite memories from my childhood take place in the snow. My father used to build my sister and I these massive snow forts that provided all sorts of entertainment for days. Every few weekends, my parents would take me ice skating in Bradford. These little family outings were so much fun and filled with lots of laughter. Almost every day after school, no matter how dark it was, my sister and I would walk over to what used to be my grandpa’s house, just to spend hours sledding down the hill in the yard.
Not only is the snow a great source of childhood memories for me, it is also so strikingly beautiful. I love looking out the big picture window in my living room most mornings to a fine layer of snow and ice coating all of the tree branches. It turns my ordinary yard into a winter wonderland. The snow also has a way of making you grateful for the warmth. It makes the warm things seem ten times greater than they do in the spring or summer. I love to take walks when the snow is lightly falling. The cold puts a spring in my step, the silence of winter is so peacefully deafening, and I feel as if I am part of a gigantic snow globe. Individual snowflakes also hold enormous amounts of beauty. The unique, fragile little flakes dance and twirl through the air until they dissolve on the palm of an outstretched hand.
Snow is a blessing in disguise. It is really under appreciated. We spend so much time complaining about it and focusing on the negative aspects, that the fantastic parts of the whole winter season are completely missed. Sometimes we all need a little reminder of the great things that we have right in front of us.

  14. Everyone knows how special a first car is to a teenager just learning how to drive. My first car was a baby blue Honda CR-V that I bought from my sister. My sister, Ally, also got the same car as her first from our dad when she first turned 16. Throughout the years this car has been in my family, it has accumulated 152,000 miles and racked up over $10,000 in repair costs. So why is this car so special to me? Along with being in my family for 12 years this car has taken me to several memorable locations and I’ve been on many adventures with Alice, my baby blue CR-V. About a week after receiving my junior license I decided to take Alice out mudding behind Kersey Park. Unfortunately, Alice is not an off-road vehicle and she bottomed out within 10 minutes of my escapade. A state cop and his friend came to my rescue however and I was out in no time, this is a memory I know I will never forget. Not only is my 2007 CR-V special to me, but also many other people who I’ve given rides. Being one of the oldest in my grade, I received my permit and license before most other people in March of my sophomore year. This is before most other people, so for a couple months I was everyone’s personal chauffeur. Because of my great experience with my first car, I’ve come to love driving and it has drawn me closer to many of my friends, even if all they needed was a ride. To many more years of safe and fun driving with my girl, Alice.

Growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, a competitive MJ never allowed anyone to outdo him. After being cut from his high school basketball team, an undiscouraged MJ spent the entire next Summer improving his game to prevent the same letdown that had befallen him his Sophomore year. Michael’s father, James, remarked, “The person [Michael] tries to outdo most of the time is himself.” Michael Jordan’s refusal to give up in the toughest of times is a mindset towards life that would benefit anyone who does similar.
After a successful college career and even more successful career in the NBA, Michael Jordan could, without a doubt, be considered the greatest basketball player of all time. Although this is true, Jordan remains humble. When asked if he believed he was the greatest, MJ responded by saying he did not want to be considered that because it shows disrespect to the great players he did not have the chance to compete against. Humility is a virtue, and by showing respect and denying the title, Michael Jordan stood strong and tall.
Stories of the life of the living legend Michael Jordan continue to be told and retold from one generation to the next. They are the stories of a man who overcame obstacles to become one of the greatest players in basketball history, all the while remaining a humble man. If singling out one aspect of Michael Jordan’s life that would help others in their pursuit of happiness, learning in life to give nothing but the best effort would be rule to follow.

    1. Regis, I think you did a great job. It added to your point to have a background on Michael Jordan. However, maybe writing in more of a high style might give people more of an inclination to read your piece. Overall, I think you did a great job paying tribute to Micheal Jordan.

    2. The addition of Jordan’s humbleness makes him seem that much better. You tied that in very nicely and it helped create a different look at him, other than his success on the court.

  16. Fall, winter, spring, and summer, without you they would all be a bummer! You have hosted a few graduation parties, many campfires, and endless games of kickball. You were home to many snowmen, leaf piles, and mud puddles, but most importantly you gave me and my neighbors a home away from home—approximately 100 feet away from home. To the field in the middle of my neighborhood, better known as the Triangle, this one’s for you.

In 2005, my family made the executive decision, without confronting their 4-year-old daughter of course, to leave our small apartment out on Bucktail Trail and move to inner city Saint Marys. At that moment I was heartbroken and did not want to leave my apple orchard and our neighbors, Bud and Evelyn. However, at the time I did not realize that the move was going to bring me friends my age and the grounds where I was going to spend every waking moment with them.

The Triangle did more than just give me a place to play with my bat and ball, but gave me my very first friends: Izzy, Kelsey, Gabe, and Jonah. When we were little, the Triangle was our stage. We hosted concerts for our parents and traveled all around the world! One tree would be Paris and the one next to it was Beijing. A few years passed, and the Triangle became home to new neighbors such as Justin, Cecilia, Stanley, and Rachel. It then transformed into a sports arena. Every night the neighborhood had a meeting time, 6:00pm. At this time, all of us kids would go to the field and play kickball, soccer, whiffle ball, you name it—we played it. As of today, the Triangle serves as a place for graduation parties and campfires. We reflect on the good old days of fun and games all while talking about future plans such as college and jobs.

You could say that the Triangle built me into the person I am today; it taught me lessons that every child needs to learn like sharing, communicating, imagination, and how to build relationships. There is going to be a time when all of us move away and the Triangle will become a place for new kids to make of it what they want, but our roots will always remain there in the heart of our neighborhood.

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love… and then we return home.”

  17. February 2 marked the half way point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. This day was also the celebration for, the seeer of seers, the prognosticator of prognosticators, Punxsutawney Phil. People flocked from all across the country to see his weather prediction. People from Indiana, Texas, Florida, Virginia, and many traveled to Gobbler’s Knob bearing the cold for the celebration. 2019’s celebration marked the 133rd time Phil rose from his burrow looking for his shadow. An impressive 30,000 people stood in the single digit weather this year for the bands, fireworks, and Phil. Some were there for only a few hours, but others stood in the frigid temperatures for up to four hours, all waiting for a groundhog’s weather prediction.
Not many people, let alone a rodent, can make 30,000 people stand in single degree weather. They traveled from close to far, dressed in many layers, all awaiting Phil’s six weak weather forecast. His predictions are not always correct, but the chance of an early spring excites many, and for those who enjoy skiing are hoping Phil sees his shadow. Many know of Phil’s weather prediction and for many a bucket list item to be at Gobbler’s Knob on February 2. The cold weather does not turn these people away. The joy and excitement, even at three in morning can be felt. This little rodent has done something big. He has brought people from across the country for one reason, a good time. At four in the morning the temperature does not seem to matter anymore as the “We want Phil. We want Phil” chants ring throughout the air as many others remain in bed.
The legend of Punxsutawney Phil travels around the country. Every February 2 people from every corner of the nation wait for Phil’s weather forecast. The little, cute groundhog warms the hearts of many as they stand wrapped in layer at Gobbler’s Knob waiting for sunrise and Phil’s prediction.

  18. “Once upon a time..” is the common beginning of fairy tales. Not so, in Ella Enchanted, written by Gail Carson Levine, which turns the fairy tale genre on its head. Ella Enchanted is a charming story of a young, rebellious girl who is cursed by a flighty fairy to forever be obedient. Though it loosely follows the tale of Cinderella, the antiqued values of these fables are replaced with modern ones. The characters are given new life through Levine’s retelling. The characters are fleshed out and given special skills, flaws and likable traits. For example, Ella is spirited, has a gift for languages, and is very clumsy, a far cry from the Cinderella we all know and love. Ella Enchanted also subverts the fairy tale genre in other ways. Romance, for example is handled in an age-appropriate and mature way. Ella’s romantic interest is Prince Charmont, however, they don’t fall in love in one night of dancing! Their relationship is built on years of friendship and mutual respect. Both know and appreciate each other flaws, while supporting each along every step of their respective journeys. Also, Ella uses her skills and saves herself from ogres and breaks her curse, all told in a way that doesn’t feel like a lecture on female empowerment. This charming, witty tale is also one of the rare books where the book is also as good as the movie. The movie is a little more humorous and modern than the book, but it has Anne Hathaway singing Queen songs, so clearly it has some saving graces. All in all, Ella Enchanted is a pleasure to read, and a charming subversive of the common fairy tale genre.

    2. I don’t believe I’ve ever read this book or watched this movie, although I might have to consider it because you made it sound very amusing. I also agree with Anna, in that the movie sounds a lot more interesting when you mentioned that it doesn’t sound like a lecture about female empowerment like other fairy tales.

  19. According to the Oxford dictionary, a saint is defined as person acknowledged as holy or virtuous and regarded in Christian faith as being in heaven after death. Seeing as Saint Rose of Lima was canonized as a saint way back in 1671, she has been seen as a strong role model of the Catholic faith and virtue throughout the years.
Saint Rose of Lima was known for her beauty and wonderful personality. Due to this, her parents wanted her to get married. However, she personally desired to take on a vow of chastity and pursue the religious life. In order to fulfill God’s calling for her, she blistered her skin with hot peppers and cut off her hair to drive away the suitors. Her outward appearance did not matter to her. Instead, she was more concerned with her soul than what society thought of her.
Furthermore, Saint Rose of Lima eventually became a Dominican of the Third Order and lived in a hut located in her family’s garden in order to seclude herself. During her time of seclusion, she would humbly commit silent acts of penance such as wear a crown of thrones as Jesus once did as well as fast. She would also take care of destitute children and elderly people in a room in her parents’ house. Saint Rose of Lima was also known for not getting a lot of sleep during the night hours, as she would often pray for hours on end instead.
Throughout this saint’s life, she constantly showed examples courage, service, humility, as well as love for God and for her neighbors. She will always be seen as a lovely rose and beam of hope in a world filling with darkness.

  20. The sizzles and pops of the cornbread frying on the stove filled the air with a sort of white noise. The aroma of the country ham on the skillet lingered in our noses, taunting us relentlessly. The sweet iced tea quenched our thirsts as we sat in the hot kitchen all together, waiting not-so patiently for supper. Southern food, my all time favorite thing of all time, has always had a place in my heart. Not only is the food delicious, but it also has the ability to bring people together. Every summer, my family and I sit in the living room of my aunts house waiting for dinner to be made as we laugh over funny stories we have made over the past year. The conversation tends to die down as we eat our big meal, enjoying every single bite as we go. As our bellies full up with amazing food and our hearts are filled with the love of family, we all give thanks to God for bringing us all together and for another year of life. Southern food, better known as comfort food, has continuously brought people together and it continues to bring my family closer each year. The love of good food and family is one of the best things I have come to know over the years.

  21. “We must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” John F. Kennedy

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, or as most know him, JFK was the 35th president of the United States and earned many titles while in office. Titles such as the youngest president along with the first Roman Catholic president. Born into one of the wealthiest families at the time, Kennedy received his education at Harvard and Stanford and then went on to become a military hero which was followed by him running for Congress in 1946 and then the Senate in 1952. Once he was President he confronted Cold War tensions in places such as Cuba and Vietnam. He also provided federal support for the civil rights movement along with leading a drive for public service. It’s no doubt that he made strong strides as president but this was all cut short on November 22, 1963 when he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. His assassination left the world in shock. There is no doubt, however, that it turned him into one of the most heroic figures this nation has seen. He is still to this day one of the most loved Presidents in history. JFK inspired and changed the lives of so many people. As Mike Mansfield, Majority Leader of the United States Senate, said in his eulogy, “A piece of each of us died at that moment. Yet, in death he gave of himself to us.”

  22. Baseball, the best game to ever set face on this earth, is America’s nation pastime. Baseball has helped our country in the darkest of times, and has produced some of the biggest role models. The first of which we all know is none other than Jackie Robinson. A name I am sure everyone has heard of. He was the first African American baseball player to ever play in the major leagues. He was given the chance to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers by the general manager Branch Rickey. Thus allowing him to break the color barrier. The white players of course were not a fan of him playing, they would often throw a pitch at is head or even try to run him over. However none of these actions were enough to stop him from doing what he loved. He was persistent, just because he didn’t fit in with the others, and was often not allowed to travel with the team to certain places he still pushed on. For all of this Jackie will always be one of the most famous names in baseball, but not just because he broke the color barrier but because what he accomplished on the field as well, hitting .311 is no easy task. About five years ago the MLB retired Robinson’s number 42 not allowing anyone else to wear it, however one a year every player wears his number in his honor. He not only changed baseball for the better, but the world and for that he will always be an inspiration.

  23. December 7, 1941, a day that will truly live in infamy. The attacking of Pearl Harbor affected many Americans to this day and forward. One morning, one bomb after another, blowing up buildings across the naval base. This was a shocking surprise and unfortunately not the surprise that you and I both love and cherish. The Japanese Navy Air Service attacked the United States Naval Base in Pearl Harbor, on Hawaii territory. This day continues to be remembered each year. We remember those who have survived though the misery and those who have fallen for our country that we love.
In honor of those soldiers, on May 25,2001, the movie Pearl Harbor was released. The movie has won many awards including; Academy Award for Best Sound Editing, MTV Movie Award for Best Action Sequence, Teen Choice Award for Film Choice Actor, Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer Movie, and Golden Roster Award for Best Translated Film. The movie goes beyond the actions that took place. This movie shows the hardships that everyone at the time were facing. From the president, the pilots, the significant others, and the families across the country, they all faced sadness. The movie is based off of two soldiers who have fell in love. The movie shows the path of the twos hardships through the dollar coaster ride of the military. Most importantly, through the Pearl Harbor attack. Watching the movie allows yourself to be put in their shoes. By watching the movie, you learn what happened and how it felt to be there at the time.
It is important that our generation continues to be reminded what happened on December 7, 1941. The soldiers at this time, “the greatest generation” were impacted tremendously and deserve to be remembered. These men and women risked their lives for us to be free today. We will always remember the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

  24. As it is said in the story of creation, “God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” The ocean is one of God’s most beautiful creations. It can represent mystery and awe, fond family memories, or travel and exploration. The ocean means something different to everyone, and that might be why it means so much. The ocean is necessary to our planet, and it must be preserved at all costs.

The ocean is not the same everywhere. It is the home to different creatures in different locations. It can be icy, salty, clear, or cloudy depending on the location. It is extremely diverse, which adds to its beauty. All cultures and forms of life have been brought together by means of the ocean. These factors encompass how the diversity of the ocean makes it such a valuable part of the world.

Despite the extensive travel done on the ocean, it is also a place of vacation. Thousands of people cruise the ocean blue daily to vacation and to explore the vast sea and its shores. From Alaska to the Caribbean, cruises are one way the ocean is appreciated. In addition, along the coast of countries across the world, people enjoy the shore. Whether it’s splashing in the waves, catching rays while laying on the sand, or running along coast, the shore is populated by vacationers every single day.

It is safe to say that nearly everyone appreciates the beauty of the ocean. It is undoubtedly gorgeous. So why do humans destroy something so beautiful? The creatures of the sea are being killed due to the trash that humans deposit into the ocean. The ocean’s beauty is in jeopardy, and it is up to humans to save it. Unless humans change their habits, the pollution of the ocean will continue and its beauty will become tainted.

The ocean’s beauty is irreplaceable. Once it is ruined, there is no way to restore it. Not only is it beautiful, it is the home to many creatures that are now suffering from the pollution caused by humans.

  25. Sit...Shake...Good boy! Dogs are a mans best friend and hold that title for eternity. They appear throughout town with their owners going for walks, in airports or public places of attraction, serving along with members of the armed forces, and, unfortunately, in animal shelters patiently waiting for their chance to find a loving home. Dogs serve a purpose for many people in the world and positively impact their lives everyday. In recent news, Sully, former President George H.W. Bush's service dog was widely acknowledged for his courageous service along side the late president. Sully will now be assisting other veterans at Walter Reed medical center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dogs assist a wide range of people and build bonds with their masters along the way. Such as those dogs serving along side those in the armed forces, they are involved directly in the protection of the members of society. They take up true positions to serve, care, and protect those around them. Not only do dogs serve in armed force branches, they help relieve stress and assist in making the everyday lives of people more efficient and accessible. Emotional support dogs are only a small portion of the dogs that make the lives of those needing assistance, easier. Serving the blind, those with anxiety, those with seizures, and any other struggle, have the opportunity to go throughout their lives with a companion at their side at all times. Although these wonder creatures are able to perform such wondrous deeds, not everyone is able to recognize their true abilities and caring qualities. Unfortunately, some dogs have to be given up and placed into the hands of shelters, humane societies, and sometimes even kill shelters. These dogs are left vulnerable and without a loving, caring home to experience. ASPCA commercials show the emotional side of how lonely and in need of love the animals are. Dogs want to be loved and cared for as much as possible. They are smart animals and can express their capabilities to their full extent. Dogs are a mans best friend, why not give them a chance to show their qualities. Tricks, service, and love are only a few qualities that dogs have to offer.

  26. David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr., Pele, and Ronaldo Nazario are just a few of the soccer legends ever to step foot onto the pitch. These men, who are idolized by many, were not just born with special gifts or God-given talents; they worked hard every day to become the men that every fan has grown to love. The knowledge of soccer and the skills presented by these six men is the prime example as to why soccer is the most beautiful game there is.
Ever since I was able to walk, there has been a soccer ball at my feet. My father signed me up for U-4 soccer in Fox Township when I was still two. I would later turn three during the season, however, I would forever be referred to as “the little kid” on my team since I was much younger than the rest. Being the undersized child, I always had to work harder than others to match their level of skill. However I do not want to be average or mediocre for my favorite sport, I want to be the best. I do not want to become the next Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, I want to be Gabriel Kear. I want to make a name for myself and not be compared to anyone because there will be nobody to compare me to in the first place. I have the same mentality as the six soccer legends previously mentioned but I do not want to be the same skill level as them; I want to be better.
Soccer is such a beautiful sport because everybody has an equal opportunity to become great. The only way to become a professional soccer player is through hard work and dedication. It takes blood, sweat, and tears to become a legend, but that is why this sport is the most popular in the world. Once someone has become not only a professional soccer player but a legend, watching him or her play is like watching a Bob Ross painting. There is a relaxation to it, yet he flows with the brush and his movements are smooth. Similar to a legend, their movements are very fluid and precise, yet it looks effortless. Soccer is one big painting, and the players are the paintbrushes.

  27. The sizzle of the hamburgers on the grill, the sound of the music playing, kids all around you playing football, and the lawn chairs are out. I am at no other than Beaver Stadium, the home field of Penn State football. People travel from all over the world to be there on game day. Kids, teenagers, and parents all come out to support their team. Without dedication like this, how else would each game average 106, 707 fans per game?
When you are in the stadium, there is nothing quite like it. The roar of the crowd when they see their team first run out, or when the first touchdown is scored, an unbelievable comeback, or an incredible overtime win. I have witnessed electrifying moments at Beaver Stadium, along with some true heartbreak. I have witnessed some of my favorite players last games, Joe Paterno get his 409th win, which was the most achieved by a college football coach, and true legends play. Nothing brings a smile quite to your face like when Sweet Caroline comes on and everyone in the crowd is singing as loud as they can. It feels as though when you are in there everyone near you becomes your best friend, even being complete strangers before. It is truly an incredible experience.
So why do I care so much? I am a teenage girl talking about loving a football stadium. But, this is the place that my family has created some of our very best memories. The football games are incredible, but there is nothing like the bond you grow when your whole family can get together and enjoy one event together so much. We have had many different friends and families join us but through it all we are always with each other. Penn State football, and Beaver Stadium will always have a special place in my heart.
