Another Modest Proposal

At the beginning of the 18th century, Ireland was experiencing an awful famine due to several years of bad harvests.  The country was also experiencing extreme political turmoil.  As a response and recommended remedy for how to fix the economic problems at hand, Jonathan Swift, an Irish satirist, essayist and political pamphleteer, anonymously published a satirical essay in 1729 entitled “A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People From Being a Burden on Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick.”  In the piece, more commonly referred to today as “A Modest Proposal,” Swift ironically attempts to “find out a fair, cheap, and easy method” for converting the starving children of Ireland into “sound and useful members of the Commonwealth.”  As the lengthy title suggest, Swift wants the people of Ireland to fatten their children up so that they can be sold in meat markets.  He states, “I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricasie, or a ragoust.”  Swift goes into great (albeit graphic) detail about how the children should be seasoned and cooked so that their parents and the country will neither be further burdened by them nor continue to be hungry.  More importantly, though, Swift argues using hard-edged economic reasoning as well as a self-righteous moral stance as he attempts to turn this problem into a solution.
It is your mission for next week’s blog post to come up with a Modest Proposal of your own:

1) Re-Reading Swift’s A Modest Proposal first may help you to better understand the task at hand. (http://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/modest.html)

2) Identify a social, financial, economic problem present in the United States (or world if you choose) today. For all of our Atheist friends, we are taking the week off in regards to church bashing. Pick something else. That's getting boring. And its a safety net.

3) Come up with a creative way that the problem could be fixed… Just like Swift’s proposal, your Modest Proposal does not need to be feasible! We are looking for clever (and funny?) ideas with their own internal logic.  One of the reasons Swift’s is effective is that in its mock-seriousness it conveys the attitude of this could be real.Have fun!

  2. Preface: A Modest Proposal for preventing drug abuse within Elk County, and in conclusion, the world. Also, I DO NOT abuse drugs it is simply for the purpose of the work.

It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through this great town, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and the doorsteps cluttered with drug abusers sitting next to needles, pills, and joints. Those who are pumping themselves up with drugs, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to resort to theft and other embarrassing odd jobs like prostitution.
I believe it can be agreed upon by all parties that there needs to be a change. We have far too many people placed in our prison systems that take up far too much space. We see police cars lined up in the streets and new reports in the papers almost daily. I have scrutinized over what we should do to help our community, and soon the world, achieve leaving this problem behind. I have a proposition that will save our jails from being maxed out due to all of the prisoners and rid crime from our streets.
I have found that the use of the drugs could benefit our world more than it can harm it. I propose that we allow drug use to be legal in all forms. All drugs come naturally so it will not harm our ozone layer. All children, within minutes of being born, shall have ports placed into their chest similar to those who partake in dialysis treatments. Then, they shall receive portable IV poles so that they many carry with them their drugs. This is not a problem, actually quite beneficial, because it will build up immunity to other dugs and illnesses. It would allow the children once they become full adult, around eighteen to twenty one, to increase the dosage.
It would also decrease the amount of crimes within our small community of Elk County. There would not be a need to steal because everyone should be on the same ‘level’ of high in our community, and soon state, would provide those who are dwelling within this community the drugs for free. Depression would also decrease because everyone is always on the high and happy. Those who fail to comply, however, will be sentenced to jail time and forced to receive their proper dosages suggests by both the doctor’s and court’s orders. These people are attempting to bring back sadness and depression in our community. They also are attempting to make our community, not immune to these drugs and diseases that are carried within our world today.
The benefits far outweigh the negative connotations, however, I see where this topic must be covered. The question of death may also need to be brought up so I decided that the best thing to do is cover this question. If one may die from say an overdose it would not be a problem. Yes, sad, but allow us to have more drugs to go around for the rest of us. Recitation would also be rejected because it would be considered a natural death in this case due to plants being natural and the use of the drugs being the new norm. It also allows us to die happy and at peace. Even though these can be considered ‘devastating’, it truly will bring us closer to world peace. The use of drugs not just as recreational but also as a civil duty can create a better world for both our generation and the ones to follow.
I admit, I would not have promoted this ideal unless we have had other options to this epidemic. However, I do not see the possibility of our community getting better without the civil duty of drug use. The use of this form of drug would allow our community, and possibly the world, become more united and the increase of immunity. I, myself, have not yet delved into the use of drugs in this way, however, I have seen where it will benefit our world far greater than allowing crime and death rates to increase.

    1. Our topics were very similar so it was nice to see your ideas compared to mine and this was really good, Grace! I liked how detailed you were with you and I can tell you really thought about all of the points you brought up.

    2. Grace, I feel as if this "Modest Proposal" is actually occurring today in reference towards marijuana. Because states are now legalizing it, it has begged the question as to whether or not to remove people who were convicted of marijuana related crimes from the prison. I personally find this highly illogical because, after all, they were convicted back when it was illegal meaning that they did indeed commit a crime. I feel like conversing that in your essay would definitely help your rhetorical motive.

    3. Funny enough, a form of your proposal is actually in place in Portugal, and it’s actually working. Search Portugal Drug Policy for more. You were definitely very detailed. I like your refutation, and thought the whole thing was well thought out and written.

  4. For the purpose of this assignment I am writing this to the most extreme level, and I do not actually agree with methods I am putting forth.

Think of the word crisis. Such a small word with such a big impact. A crisis is a time of danger and most crises have a simple solution. Right now America is experiencing an opioid crisis. People everywhere are dying and others are experiencing an overwhelming sense of panic. But like any crisis there is a solution; a rather easy one in this case. Doctors in the United States should prescribe everyone opioids, starting at the moment of birth. Once this is set into action the crisis will no longer exist seeings as everyone will be hooked on drugs such as oxycontin, hydrocodone, morphine, and even fentanyl. The first step would be regulation. Every month each American family will get a catalog of sorts in which they can list the amount of the drug they want and it will be delivered to them. One positive impact this will have is a lower crime rate. Illegal drug deals will no longer have to take place and that alone will decrease violence. It will also strengthen families. There are so many families today that do not spend time together, but families can choose and take their opioids together! It will also encourage families to have more babies. When babies are on opioids, they will wake up less in the middle of the night and cause less fuss. This will make parenting easier and encourage the birth of more babies. One last major fix this would put in place is all around happiness. Through opioids there would be less pain in everyone’s lives and without that it would be easier to lean towards things that make us happy. Of course, with anything there are downsides. Even in this situation there is the concern of people not wanting to take the opioids. It will be mandated that everyone must take their monthly portion of opioids. If they refuse, they will be imprisoned and there forces to take the drugs delivered to them. As a nation we must remain unified and face this crisis together. We must rise up and join those struggling with opioids.

    1. I know you mentioned that those who do not consume opioids would be jailed, however, I think that if you were to decriminalize such drugs it would serve a "benefit" to the judicial system. After all, there wouldn't be as many opioid convictions and you could "release" those who were convicted of opioid related crimes. Just playing devils advocate here to add to your argument, this isn't my actual stance in regards to opioids.

    2. Lake, I really enjoyed your version of “a modern proposal.” I think you effectively illustrated the logical points to your argument as well as adding the shock factor, just like Swift did. Great job!

    3. Lake, your proposal was very interesting! Your supporting details really brought the eye-opening factors along with your main idea. Just as there are people against drugs now, there would be people against it then as well. I’m glad you mentioned that! Your idea of a monthly subscription to an opiod catalog was definitely a clever one. I enjoyed reading your piece!

  5. In my opinion, one of the growing problems throughout the world is education inequality. This is an economic problem because children are given the type of education they can afford, which is not the type of education that they deserve. Therefore, oftentimes children whose parents are poor end up with a sub-par education. This is extremely unfair because in most cases, the circumstances are far beyond the control of the parent. This doesn’t even account for children, mostly girls, who live in impoverished countries and don’t receive an education at all. If they do, it typically doesn’t include education at the collegiate level. The right to a good education is a right for every single child, not just those who can afford it.
To remedy this situation, I propose that society should just do away with education altogether. That way, each child has the same advantage regardless of economic status. Children would learn through a trade. If the trade demanded a lot of math skills, they would gradually learn them. If the trade demanded a lot of critical thinking skills, they would be developed over time. The child would be learning only the skills specific to his/her trade and forgoing all other skills that would be otherwise useless.
Obviously this proposal presents a lot of issues concerning the more difficult trades such as doctors, engineers, or rocket scientists. However, if the child is placed in the environment of their chosen trade at a very young age, they will learn it as easily as they would learn a language since the brain is still developing. Thus would also make life much easier for the parents because they wouldn’t have to spend so much time looking after and caring for the child because he/she would already be training for a job as young as age five or six, when they would normally start kindergarten.
This proposal would remove the education gap in our world by rendering the typical k-12 education obsolete. Children would instead, spending a certain amount of years learning one specific trade and nothing more. Regardless, something must be done to fix the ever present issue of education inequality.

    1. I enjoyed reading your own rendition of Swift’s Modest Proposal. Your idea of developing skills with such tasks over a period of time was a great inclusion to your main proposal. Education carries a variety of socioeconomic issues and your lead-in to your remedy described those issues very clearly. Great job, Sophie!

    2. I think you picked a good topic to write about, it is a big problem. And your solution is both achievable and practical. After reading it, you had me thinking that would actually work, and to an extent I think it would, such as a trade school instead of a general college. your point about learning while the brain is developing making it easier was also very good to tie together the age and the ease of this process. You also appealed to the parents who would be making the decisions. I really don't have much to complain about in your blog, your closing statement made you sound not confident in your own proposal which I don't think ended it off in the best way possible, but that's about it. Very nice.

  6. A Modest Proposal to Stop Crime

It is an awful sight to see so much lawlessness on the news and inside our very own neighborhood. Junkies passed out in the street with needles still hanging from their arms, the dust on the brim of their nose, and a big blunt covered in saliva dripping down their shirt. Men and women dressing plotting and scheming to rob a bank whilist brandishing a deadly weapon. People maiming, mistreating, and murdering one another whether it be for food, money, or spite. The modern world had become a scary one due to these crimes, however, I have come up with a modest proposal to stop crime.
It would be in society's best interest to remove all laws and promptly disband all forms of government in order to prevent crime, after all, there can not be crime if laws don't exist. We wouldn't have to worry about all of the junkies because they would gather up and move to the place that is best meant for their preferred type of drug. Robberies would drop to an all time low because the government would no longer be functioning, meaning the monetary system would stop, and hence the dollar would be worth absolutely nothing so there would be no point in stealing it. The conviction rate will drop to zero percent and jails would be disbanded and those who previously were sentenced will reenter society and help prevent crime. These are among many of the benefits to disbanding laws and government practices.
First of all, this is how nature always designed how society would work. We were never meant to have big cities, clothes, or social system, only natural law and Darwinism. So, through Darwinism, humans will become the most powerful beings because only the fit will survive. Similar to Hitler, we will end up being the true "Aryan race" and have a perfect world because nature runs it.
Second, no one would have to work because there would be no monetary system. That eight to four system would no longer exist, and thus, everyone would be on the same scale. No one would be better than one another because of their economic class or any other social factor, only based on whether or not they are still breathing. If someone dies, then we can just use them for food, after all, we don't want to waste perfectly good meat and skin that we can use for boots and gloves.
Third, murder and violence will cease to exist. If you really think about it, violence and murder stem from a place where someone believes they are inept to do something and are angered because of it. So, if there is no purpose to life other than to survive then why would people murder instead of making allies? People would be all around more friendly in order to survive.
I admit, this is a rather skeptical decision that could lead to people in power abusing this, but I have no motive to do so. I intend on staying inside of my safe bunker where no one could get me so I would have no gain whatsoever towards removing the government institution and allowing all forms of crime.

    1. Logan, I think you took your topic in an interesting direction. I feel that there is a lot going on in your paper, and I found it a bit difficult to follow. However, I believe this, in a way, effectively captures the spirits Swift’s work—it’s kind of nonsense (this is not to be taken in a harsh way). I like how you alluded to Swift’s work too. For me personally, however, I just felt a little lost in what you were trying to convey. Other than that, you did a good job.

    2. Logan, this was comical to read and gave me a good laugh thinking about what society would be like if your proposal was fulfilled. 7. A Modest Proposal on Immigration

It is a melancholy object to consider the suffering of Mexicans.  Consider, for instance, the predicament of a poor boy out working the corn fields for a tiny amount of money, only to come home and find that a drug-trafficking group has tortured his family and burnt their house to the ground. This innocent child had a dream for his parents to see him earn an education. But no more. All people of a stable mentality are forced to admit that this is an unpleasant situation. Only the most unpleasant would be left without a feeling of compassion. Any method to improve this state of affairs must be immediately accepted.
Fortunately, I have a solution. Everyone in the world can be invited into safe, prosperous America, whereupon the government can redistribute wealth, food, medical care, and love from Americans to the new arrivals, who will be free to enter and leave as they please. All ports, airports, and land borders of all sorts must be completely opened up. Naturally, the primary motivation for this plan is for the well-being of others. No longer can ruthless Americans put the welfare of our children first. American laws must be dictated by the interests of billions of people we have never met.
In addition to being morally proper, this decision also carries many wonderful practical benefits.
First of all, the Republican Party could be destroyed for good. Republicans' outdated notions about preserving American culture have lingered far too long. The time has arrived in order to finish them. When the borders open, they will be completely overwhelmed. America's new owners will vote with a great majority for the Democratic Party. Not only will Democrats win, but they will continue moving to the left. Republicans will become a meaningless group.
Second, the vicious political ideas of America's founders, from George Washington to Thomas Jefferson, could finally be wiped off the face of this earth forever. Those men were the devil in human form. They burdened us with a Constitution. As if the power of government should be limited and the rights of each person strengthened.
Third, that ugly concept of patriotism can be ended. Americans can stop trying to advance the narrow interests of American citizens at the expense of others. This can be an experience of being set free for once and for all. Rather than working to preserve our society, we can just relax and accept what people around the world tell us is best. We can give in to indifference and decline. America had a centuries-long run; it is time to retire. How anyone cannot admit to this fact is beyond me.
The government can be expanded endlessly. Naturally, when America abolishes its borders, the world's poorest, loneliest, corrupt criminals will have the highest incentive to come. With no families, career, or wealth, they have nothing to lose and everything still to take. These new voters will do two excellent things: vote for policies obliging the government to hire huge numbers of people to take wealth from current Americans and give it to future Americans, and additionally, they will commit various types of fraud, placing further demands on the government to grow!  Finally, America can enjoy an all-inclusive government.
It seems to me that this proposal will meet with common acceptance. I am nothing but reasonable. Unfortunately, the current system allows these old-school individuals to voice their opinions in relative safety. But there is no space for that in our brave new future. It would be very messy if Americans had to fight each other over these issues. Thankfully, the imports, some of whom have terrific experience as killers, will gladly handle the problems.
Overall, this plan will be an amazing triumph for non-American people, equality, and world peace. It is astonishing that this plan has not been officially adopted yet, though, thankfully, our leaders have already taken steps in this direction. This obvious proposal must be implemented to its full extent as soon as possible.

  8. A modest proposal to end alcoholism and juuling:

Alcoholism, DUI’s, and drunk driving have all became regular occurring events in Elk County, Pennsylvania throughout the past few decades. Stories float around the community, filling young children’s heads with the idea that alcohol abuse is accepted. Heavy alcohol use causes many diseases that affect the brain, nerves, muscle tissue, heart, stomach, liver, pancreas and other organs. Consuming alcohol is a risk factor for several cancers, and it's associated with psychological disorders as well. Alcohol can ruin the body and affect the mind. There are a number of crimes that are related to the consumption of alcohol. And when those crimes occur, the consequences affect not only the person, but their family, and often the public in general as well. Alcohol impairs one’s judgment and alters the way they think. There is a close link between alcohol and criminal actions around the world. However, these instances do not all occur in Elk County but if we keep allowing for the spread of Alcoholism, they will. According to the Department of Justice there are 2 million convicted criminals currently in jail. Of those, 37% report that they were drinking at the time of their arrest. The data also shows that alcohol plays a role in 40% of all violent crimes. Using alcohol also leads people into temptation, including young adults to juul and become addicted to nicotine, a new issue in our society.
Due to the fact that the spread of alcoholics and bad behavior is spreading quickly and taking over our town, I propose that we make it legal to consume alcoholic beverages at the age of 12 and older, rather than 21 years of age. Why make children wait to drink alcohol when they can start young. By the age of 12 children are ready to be like there parents and they will now be able to bond with them in a better way. This will give children freedom that they deserve and parents the ability to let loose and care less about what their children are doing on the weekends. Also, I propose that at the age of 12, each child is given a juul in order to experience the use of nicotine. I hope these propositions can be put into action and allow for a better and more mature community.

    1. I actually kind of like your idea. Maybe not to that extent, but I've always felt that some people only start using drugs to defy others, such as parents. And if it is legalized for them, there wouldn't be an edge factor associated with it, there would only be the actual results of usage, which are generally negative and very unnecessary. I haven't researched it much but that's what I think about it. Other than that, I think you did a great job spelling out the problem and the information about it. That said, I would've liked to see more on your solution, it just seems that the solution is the main event and that it was subdued by everything else. Pretty good overall though.

    3. Emily, I really like yours, and like the idea A LOT. 12 years old is quite toung, but European countries have lower ages of drinking and such. The us is quite high actually in this notion of drinking age. It's not like kids don't drink right now at our age. Most of us have been to parties, so I mean we already do it(and might do it on regular occasions), so if officials know we do it at 16,17,18, just lower the age to 16!

  9. A Modest Proposal for the End of Hate Speech and for a Brighter Tomorrow.

A big problem I have noticed that is only becoming more troublesome is the decline in the acceptance of free speech. More and more people are turning this right into a form of hate speech. People are too easily becoming offended at the wrong things and this is quite troubling to me personally because I value the use of speech in humor, and in order to not allow this to flutter even further out of control, I have devised a solution, and a rather simple one at that: that free speech is taken away from all unworthy persons, and that all public speech be taken away from those deemed unfit. It is a rather simple fix but quite unbreakable. The benefits are countless. Not only will it stop people hurting others with such painful objects as words, but also assist in the shortage of unskilled labor. And the benefits don’t stop there, this solution would also work to better every individual, by way of their mental evaluation.

Under my solution, anyone who speaks out of turn will be punished to the extent of one’s days labor. They shall work where it is needed for no pay. They have broken the law, this is fair treatment. Exceptions shall be made for people of power. Increased taxes shall account to several unrestricted sentences a day, and government work shall account for even more. Those in a learning environment may speak to the portrayal of knowledge and teaching, and underlings may answer in brief at the call of the proctor. All of these areas shall have government employees watching over to uphold the law, of course. Minor offenses may be punished on a person to person basis by the current upholder, and major offenses shall lead to work. Where only the greatest of betrayals, those defacing Lord Trump or the sweetness of Nutella, shall call for an immediate court hearing with a minimum of 2 year’s labor or death for repeated offenses. Those under age of comprehension shall be exempt, except where it is deemed unright.

The mental health of every person is also of the utmost importance under my solution. Every person shall be uninterrupted by the pesky sounds of other, or by the sounds of themselves, so that they may fully develop their own thoughts in the peace of their own mind. All persons shall live in the peace and quiet that is necessary to gain the perspective of their own thought. Everyone will be able to process life in their own mind and be able to live their dreams, through dreams. Not in real life of course, we don’t have that anymore. Dreams are a social construct meant to evaluate the hopes of everyone, and they set up unequal expectations for people, and are of course heavily outlawed in public. Microphones shall also be set up in all places, including the home and the outdoors in order to make sure no one is breaking the law outside the official’s immediate jurisdiction. Everyone can develop their own theories on the world and its origins, and no one can try to tell them that they’re wrong. Everyone is right in this society, in my society.

As anyone with even the remnants of a bran can see, my solution is the only one worthwhile to pursue in this day. Not only does it fix the damaging of people’s feelings, it basically solves the labor shortage, as well as giving everyone the chance to fully develop their ideas without distraction. There is no other fix that can compare to the longevity of mine or the effectiveness. Feelings will be saved, jobs will be filled, and thoughts will be developed, this is solution, the only solution, the final solution, for a better world!

  10. Preface: I am not saying this is actually a solution, but am only writing this for the purpose of the prompt.

If one is involved in society, politics, and economics even the slightest bit, then they would know that the United States and its people are known for over spending their money. America as a whole is a great amount of debt due to the fact of the overwhelming prices of almost anything one can think of. And, even if a family has a sustaining amount of money, many times they spend it on things they do not need, which causes a scare and them to go “into the red” financially. Whether it be the cost of the cheapest shampoo or the most expensive television on the market, it would most likely be way overpriced for at least one person living in this country.

To fix this issue the solution I propose is that the manufacturing companies of these products and the government work together to make every item in every store free of charge. If this were to happen, not only would an obvious amount of money be recovered, but a more equal playing field would be open for those under the poverty line, the lower class, the middle class, and the upper class. The government would also not have to give food stamps and money to the impoverished, and the money used for those could be used for the large amount of debt the United States is already in. This solution would possibly solve the immigration issue and lower the number of homeless people living on the streets. Speaking on another level, all forms of education could also be free or a small cost depending on the type of education, whether it be a private or public elementary, middle, high school, or college level education. Solving the nations debts would be the first step into becoming a better place for all people including us, generations that came before us, and the generations that are to come after us.

  11. The government of the United States is quite the expensive commodity. On an annual scale, the US government uses around 3.8 trillion dollars according to National Priorities Project. That's quite a hefty price for a system that works at a  slow, ineffective pace. They also take quite a large amount of money from the people of the US. Most of the politics in the United States is corrupt and destructive anyways. On top of that, the US government also restricts corporations from using their full production, restrict their emissions and not allowing them to make as much money as they could, and so that also restricts how much workers make. The only thing the government is really useful for is the judiciary system and protecting our people through the armed forces Yet, the proposal I have for the people of the US that could take care of all of our problems, without getting rid of protect of human rights and lives.

For the people of the United States, I propose that we completely and fully decentralized and destroy the United States government, and get rid of the annual spending bill. This would put 12,000 dollars in the pockets of every man, woman, and child in the US. This would also destroy taxation, allowing for even more money to enter our lives, except a tax for armed forces. People will live by their own rules, with a moral compass leading their ways so they don't kill people and hurt others. The armed forces will be around still, yet they make money off of people, and if people do not pay for armed forces, well they'll have a small visit from the army to make sure everything is in check. Also the armed forces would be allowed to wear whatever they bring with them into the army. Yellow rainjacket, your favorite croptop, seatpants, if you brought it, you can wear it. Just to cut down on the taxes people have to pay. Along with the army, we shall go to a conscript idea for the army, making every able man and woman sign up for the draft and also served a mandatory two-five years in the forces, so they gain respect and admiration for their forces and also can be drafted and thrown into the army immediately without need of training if a war comes along. Corporations will flourish, outputting more products and services at a cheaper price while people earn more, leader to another Golden Age like in the 1950s, except less corruption. The judicial system will still be around for the correction of evil men, yet they shall judge people off of moral standards, so things like abortion shall be outlawed. Also instead of the government working at a slow pace, the people and companies shall instead band together to fix infrastructure and other social problems. Because of this, smaller construction and trades will become richer, and will have a influx of people into the jobs. The idea of this is the workers get richer, the entrepreneurs will get richer, and everyone will get richer. People will gain respect for our armed forces and will also be ready for war if war comes to be. Cost will drop, and income will rise. It's a perfect system.

I in no way support this idea of neo-anarchy, with my own twists to it. Not only would companies be able to get away with some evil crimes, and hide them, but people could also not get payed at all, if it's hidden well. Judges could he corrupt and we would end up being ruled by generals, become a stratocracy, or a military government. Think USSR in the middle of WWII, with Stalin and his generals ruling overall. I don't like the sound of that being honest.

  12. A Modest Proposal on the Justice System and Prisons
Time and time again our news channel headlines announce the overcrowding of another prison, the economic issues of prisons, and the increasing amount of murders within prisons. It is estimated in 2018 that there were a total of 2.3 million inmates incarcerated. The rise of overcrowding has resulted in various complications such as poor health care, increased gang activity, violence, and spread of disease. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, incarceration costs an average of more than $31,000 per inmate, per year, with it being as much as $60,000 is some states. Therefore, who is prison punishing more, the incarcerated individual or the average working American whose tax dollars help to pay for the basic needs of these individuals.
In an effort to correct the United States prison complications, I propose that the US rids of all the prisons. This obviously a beneficial solution considering the fact that the absence of all prisons will cease all costs that must be made to the prisons. It is obvious that the US prison system is only causing economical problems. In fact, the justice system is in no way helping anyone.
Without prisons no money would need to go toward the prison systemm. There would also be a decrease in gang activity, disease, and violence. Im aware that it is possible that more crime would take place due to the lack of prisons. However, because of an absent justice system, everyone would eventually become accustomed to committing the same levels of crime thus making us a more equal society.

  13. I do not think this is a viable or practical solution.

Trash is an eyesore that can be found along roads, in the oceans, and throughout parks. This pollution is terrible for the surrounding environment. It kills animal life. It kills sea life. It kills plant life. Pollution and litter are disastrous and dangerous for all.
Luckily, I have a modest proposal that will solve the problem concerning litter and pollution. Imagine a world where litter and pollution have not touched the ground for miles and miles. Imagine a world where the air is free from the smog and gasses caused from factory production and car exhaust. Imagine a fresh start.
In order to solve the problem, we should simply move to another planet. If people would begin to move to other life sustaining planets, the pollution on Earth could be cleaned up in the meantime, and a happier, healthier environment would occur on Earth while other planets begin to be colonized. There is an estimated 6.5 million tons of garbage finding its way into the ocean each year. Around the world, there are two hundred known “dead zones” that are deprived of both oxygen and life. This number has continued to double each decade since 1960. By reducing the population on Earth by sending willing participants to other planets, the number of pollutants and “dead zones” would begin to slow and possibly decrease over time. Overpopulation would no longer become a serious concern, either. With much of Earth already being discovered, conquered, and occupied, it is about time to take the next step. Other planets are out there ready to be found and colonized. It simply becomes a question of who wants to be the next pioneer to make history in outer space. Once colonization begins, life is sure to be much better. With knowledge of the problems that can arise from pollution, people would have a much more environmentally friendly lifestyle in order to prevent another problem on their new home planet. Moving to other planets is the only viable solution in regards to the pollution dilemma.
My solution for solving the crises concerning the pollution and litter problem that has caused a great deal of problems for the environment is ideal and indefectible. There are few other options that would be as effective in solving this issue.

  14. A Modest Proposal in Regards to Cheating on the SATs and What To Do About It

Unfortunately, throughout the ages, children of wealthy descent have been able to achieve more opportunities because of their family money and name in comparison to those without a name to their face, who are located at the bottom of the social pyramid. This also extends into academics, especially into what I believe has been going on for quite some time, which has finally been exposed to the public eye: cheating on the SATs. This test of a student's academic skills is suppose to measure the high school student’s readiness for college. This test provides colleges with a common data point which can be used in order to compare all those who apply to a specific college and decide who is the best fit. However, this recent turn of events including a cheating scandal being exposed to the public will not be silenced, as it has been happening for years. It is here that I am going to be reassuring in the fact that I have a plan which will solve everything. I have thought about this for years on end. After researching every possible outcome as well as their pros and cons, a conclusion has been drawn in the most confident manner. Simply put, college will be banned. Due to the fact that it determines readiness for college and that it is quite difficult to monitor cheating, if it is ended all together, there will be no need to worry about which tests are truthful. As for those who have already cheated their way into college, they will be included in the rest of the population which will, instead, have on the job training just
Ike everyone else. The amount of hours for training will be decided by the profession. This will completely level the playing field rather than the wealthy taking the spots of good hard working people in colleges located throughout the United States. This way, the only way to get ahead is to work hard and learn, and when the employer decides that the person is ready, they can choose to grant them the job. By eliminating college, there will be no need for cheating on the SATs just to smuggle one’s way into the college of their choosing.

  15. A Modest Proposal on How to Solve Global Warming

A rising problem in our simply problematic world today is the danger of the current and further impending aspect of Global Warming. This problem is defined as a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. This will result in many natural problems such as more polluted air, higher rates of death among both humans and animals, an increase in severity of weather, extinction amongst animals and a substantially higher acidic percentage in the oceans. The sad truth is that there is very little we, as a nation, can do to solve this problem. However, very little may be just enough!

Luckily, I have devised a modest proposal to my fellow Americans and fellow earth-goers that could put an end to this horrible experience ahead of us. The date is set and the hour will soon come. Half past the midnight hour on the 28th of March will be a moment for history. A great deal of wind and cold air will be produced at this very moment, which will then put Global Warming on the decline. For this to happen, I am in need of a mass commitment to my modest proposal. I am pleading that, on this day, you open your windows and stick out your portable fans facing the east at exactly 12:30. If everyone in the entire world, give or take a few, can do this it will be a saving point for this nation. The large deal of wind and cold air will immediately decrease the temperature and cause for an end to Global Warming. What do you say? Do you want to save your humanity? I sure do! Who’s with me? I pray that you accept my modest proposal.

  16. A Modest Proposal on Climate Change and How We Can Prevent It

Protests, rallies, and petitions are occurring all over the world trying to help and prevent climate change which is happening to our planet. Climate change is when the Earth’s weather patterns and climate systems shift and change for decades or centuries at a time. Climate change is changing temperature, killing animals, affecting ecosystems, creating natural disasters, and endangering land all over the world. We are in trouble and we need to save our planet.
My proposal; One of the most harmful things humans are doing to the Earth is producing too much carbon dioxide into the air from their cars. There is an apparent solution which can reduce this. We must walk everywhere. Cars will become a thing of the past. Other forms of transportation must also diminish. We will return to the days when we walked nearly everywhere. Sailing on the ocean is an accepted route of travel, but nothing else. The increased amount of walking will enhance many benefits. Not only will we decrease the immense amount of carbon dioxide, but in order to have an adequate pair of shoes to walk in they must be very well made. These shoes can be made from recycled plastic that is retrieved from the ocean. Plastic and waste found in the ocean is yet another issue our society is dealing with. Proper shoes will be built and sidewalks will be paved. We will no longer need roads, which will allow for more trees to be built. By taking the proper steps we will at once, eliminate all issues in the environment and end climate change. It all start by the extinction of cars.

  18. A Modest Problem on Traffic Accidents

Far too often, everyday families experience tremendous horror and tragedy. On average, 3,287 people lose their lives per day to motor vehicle accidents. These accidents not only cause physical death of those involved, but emotional death for their families and even those who survive the crashes.
In a perfect world, no families would have to lose their loved ones to those horrific moving death traps. I propose that companies cease production of motor vehicles and citizens start to ride the old-fashioned way: horse-and-buggy. Picture a world without families mourning nearly 1.3 million people that died in vehicular accidents per year. The world would become a much safer place for our children to grow up, needless to say: happier.
Riding on horse-and-buggy would be far more convenient now than it was before vehicles were even invented. Today, cities and towns are much closer together, significantly cutting down on traffic time. People can safely reach their desired destination without having to fear the detrimental consequences of riding in a car. It can put drivers to ease and put their families in a peaceful state of mind. Another useful advantage of completely abolishing cars is the positive impact it will bear on the environment. The world will be a significantly cleaner place without the harmful pollution caused by the exhaust of vehicles. Horse-and-buggies also do not require the use of precious natural gas that citizens are using ever so quickly. This method could quickly eliminate the need for harmful fracking. In more ways than many, eliminating vehicles and reintroducing the horse-and-buggy method of transportation will completely change the world for the better.

  19. A Modern Proposal to Save the Education System

The American education system is a joke at this point in time. Even with all the technology of today’s world, the school system has continued to fail kids. Some sort of change needs to be made so that our kids today, may become the leaders of tomorrow. With the technology provided by the modern world a real difference can be made in the education of the next generation.
I propose all schools use government and independent funding to provide each and every high school student with an Apple iPad. Apple is a very reliable tech company that allows organizations who use their products to monitor usage and make sure their products are being used correctly. These apple products will promote the usage of mobile technology and allow schools to actually have to “teach” less. Blended classrooms are becoming more and more popular and their effectiveness has led to the increased popularity. A blended classroom is one where the teaching is done using online videos and the actual teacher answers questions or helps students beyond the video. These iPads have the potential to save the education system with absolutely no negative consequences. IPads are the future of teaching, there will be no more computer games, no more texting in class, and no more wasting time all thanks to iPads.

  20. A modest proposal on school shootings and how we can prevent them.

School shootings are a large problem in the world today. People these days are mentally insane and we never know what they might do. There is only one way to stop reoccurring school shootings, teaching kids how to use fire arms. Being scared to send your kids to school will be a thing of the past. Starting age 3 we will teach kids how to use firearms such as semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and as they get older automatic rifles. This new law will allow kids to protect themselves during a school shooting. The law will start teaching kids what guns are used for and how they work for one hour a day durning the school day starting in three year old preschool until they are seniors in high school. When kids reach second grade they will be given a complimentary automatic pistol. The children will be responsible for bring this to school everyday locked and loaded. The second grade year the kids will begin target practice making sure they have the skills to take down an intruder. Having all school children armed from second grade on will stop outside intruders from causing this terror. The children will develop a greater military performance due to all the teaching throughout their school years. The military will be strong and our kids will be safe. The only way to feel safe in schools will be to give all children firearms to have during school days. I’d say this a heck of a way to fight fire with fire. School shooters won’t even know how to approach the school without getting lit up.

  21. A prominent issue in the United States that is negatively affecting traffic, electricity, and the proficiency of the human being is the lack of sleep among the great majority of people. People of all ages, from school children to laborers suffer from an extreme lack of sleep. I have a modest proposal that will reshape the status of our country for the better. By allowing people of all ages to sleep for as long as they wish before going to work or school, many of the country’s problems would be eliminated.
Rush hour is a terrible time of day when everyone is commuting at the same time. This idea is preposterous, as it opens the door to car accidents, road rage, and untimely a major waste of time that would be avoided. By allowing people to leave their home at whatever time they wish, there would not be set times of day when traffic is unbearably jammed, as people would be able to leisurely leave their house whenever they desire. In addition, there would inevitably be fewer car accidents due to the fact that fewer people would be on the road at one time, and little to none of them would be in an extreme hurry. With that, there would be fewer drivers breaking the law because they would not be in a rush to get to a place. By allowing people to choose what time to go to work or school, the roads of the United States would be safer.
Conserving energy is a major necessity in a country that relies on electricity for nearly every action. From the moment one’s alarm rings, and until they turn their lights off at night, they are constantly using electricity. By permitting and encouraging people to sleep for as long as they want, there would be a dramatic decrease in the use of energy. It is important for people to sleep when it is dark, so that they are not wasting electricity during the night. This is not only beneficial to those who wish to conserve energy, but also to those who do not want to pay a high electricity bill. A modest use of electricity is a direct effect of allowing people to sleep as long as they wish, and it is beneficial to the planet.
It is proven that people across the country do not get enough sleep. Schools and businesses need to realize that people are more productive on a full night of rest. Someone who works long hours and begins early in the morning will likely have the same level of productivity as someone who sleeps in and works few hours during the day as their energy level directly influenced their work. In addition, people who come to work or school well rested will be in a positive mood and likely will be eager to do their job. Motivation and productivity will be at an all time high if we adopt the idea of allowing people to sleep as long as they desire.
Many of the problems in our country could be fixed by encouraging people in the workplace and in school to sleep until they are fully rested. Heavy traffic would be nearly nonexistent, electrical conservation would be at at all time high, and productivity and motivation among people would benefit our country in countless ways. There is no doubt that people do not get enough sleep, it is time for that to change.

  22. A Modest Proposal on the Dangers of Obesity in the United States

Currently, over one-third of the American population is obese. Not one state has an obesity rate lower than twenty percent, despite the fact that the national average is fifteen percent. This steady incline needs to be taken care of immediately, even if it calls for drastic measures.

When someone is clinically announced obese, they are suggested to go on a diet, however, studies show that that almost never seems to work. Nearly ninety-five percent of those who say that they are going on a diet fail, and out of those who actually do succeed, 90% of them end up gaining the weight back anyway. In addition, dietary supplements such as meal replacements and weight loss pills, can actually be unhealthy if there is a lack of exercise or a calorie requirement is not met.

Due to this ineffective process of weight loss, I propose the idea of getting these people’s butts off the couch, hands out of the chip bags, and their feet on treadmills. However, not just any treadmills, but treadmills held underground that produce cheap and efficient electricity for the city neighboring above. The individual will be required to live underground in small developments where they will be served three meals a day that are made entirely of weight loss superfoods such as apples, chia seeds, and black beans. There will be visiting hours for family, but the patient will only be allowed to return to their regular lifestyle once they reach the weight benchmark.

This proposal will not only benefit the obese, but citizens’ electric bills will decrease, allowing them to discontinue the use of valuable fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Cars, homes, and everything else one could imagine will operate using electricity and the fear of running out of these fuels will be nonexistent.

Soon enough, the United States will not be known as the leading country of obesity because this form of constructive criticism is the only efficient solution to our nationwide problem.

  23. A Modest Proposal on the topic of Obesity

Obesity is probably the largest problem in the United States at the moment, and because of that, I have put countless hours into figuring out the most efficient way to solve said problem.

There is no benefit to obesity, none at all. Obesity only weighs down society with unnecessary obligations and dead weight. Furthermore, obesity is far too taxing on the community to put the weight of taking care of them on their shoulders. To my understanding, obesity only serves a reminder to the healthy of what losing it all looks like.

It is because of this that I propose we begin executing members unfit for society. This will be beneficial in many ways. First, it will take a ton of weight off the shoulders of the rest of society and allow them to help the poor and destitute. Second, the fat of these individuals can be used in a number of ways, from candles to cooking. They may also bring a profit through their hair and tanned hides. Many of these individuals could provide enough hide to clothe three children for two winters.

I believe this a modest proposal because it will solve the problem quickly but not get in the way of anyone. This solution is by far the best proposal I have ever seen or thought of.

  24. There is no doubt that the opioid epidemic has wreaked havoc across rural America, and Elk County has not been spared. Our area has the highest rates of opioid use in the state, and it seems that almost daily someone is arrested for drug possession. This epidemic has caused endless pain and suffering for the families of the addicts, and the community at large. Addicts cannot keep a steady job, so work productivity is low. They cannot take care of their children properly, so they must be raised by others. They constantly need funds for their habit so, they steal money to get their drugs. All of this is just the tip of the iceberg of the damage these addicts caused, in order to fulfill their selfish needs. Clearly a solution is needed.
I propose that in order to solve the opioid epidemic, addicts should be killed on sight. Those who kill these addicts will receive an certain amount of money for their service to the community. Once someone is known to be an addict, their photo would be made public on an online database. Whoever kills them, will turn the body in and receive a certain amount of cash, in thanks for getting this parasite out of the community.
Though this may seem a bit harsh, it is extremely sensible. These addicts, who do nothing but put an burden on their families and society as a whole, would be gone for good. No longer would families be pestered for cash and childcare, and no long would the community have to suffer because of these people. Children of addicts would no longer have unstable home lives, and could finally have good role models in their lives. The money that people receive could be spent to help revive the local economy. People would, not surprisingly, would be less likely to use drugs and become an addict, if this policy was put into place. Drug dealers would take their business elsewhere, and not corrupt any more of Elk County’s youth.
Drug addicts are nothing parasites on our society and deserve to be shot on sight. They are practically asking for their punishment, by damaging their families and our community beyond repair. If, this sensible policy was put in place, all would benefit and Elk County could finally recover

  25. A hard worker. These types of people seem almost impossible to find. In May of 2018, The Washington Post said that the U.S. has 6.6 million job openings and only 6.4 million unemployed. How come there is unemployment? There are plenty of jobs for everyone! This gap between job openings and unemployed shows how lazy this country has become. People expect things to be given and not earned.
This best way, that I have found, to become more motivated and hardworking is to become runner. This task involves more than just going for an easy four or five miles a day, but by committing ones life to it. This involves eating healthy, stretching routinely, getting plenty of rest, and setting and achieving goals. The aspect of living a healthy life style with create extra energy and a drive to get this accomplished. The ability to set a goal and steps to achieve this goal can carry forward into everyday life. A running goal may be to run a certain time, place at a race, or run so far, but the same method used for setting these goal can be used anywhere.
Speaking from my personal experience, I have learned the benefits of committing fully to running. While training, I experience a drive to tackle any goal set out before me. The beginning of a training season when I shoot for the stars and write down a goal that seems almost impossible the fire gets ignited. When a goal is written down and a fire begins to burn inside of someone is exactly when a lazy person becomes a hard working person. By committing fully to running someone can learn the great possibilities that can be achieved through oneself, that any goal can become a possibility with a little hard work.
The idea of waking up with sun and torturing ones body may not seem appealing to most, but a new motive for life can be found in these very moments. The moments when it seem impossible to run harder, to go any faster is when one becomes stronger. The day now begins, but to know that the day was started out “on the right foot” leaves for some many possibilities. A runner does not tackle things have heartedly, but sees the step taken toward the end goal in every interval, lifting session, floor sweeping, or mill ran. A runner sees no point in wasting and goes at everything full heartedly. A runner nows that he does not need to be out side bearing the freezing temperatures and could be snuggled up in bed, but instead, sees the end goal and will work hard at it no matter how boring or painful it might be

  26. Almost everyday we hear someone talk about something they heard on the television this morning or something they read about. Constantly talking about what is going on in today’s world, good or bad. Yet, some news stations have gotten so caught up in take democratic or republican sides, or always changing the stories here and there, making one not know what to believe. This is a social problem in today’s society that needs to be fixed. From the kid the Catholic student in Kentucky “being racist” to Trump being a “horrible president”, it’s time the news takes a more positive role in our society. The suggestion that I believe is the only way to fix this is to no longer have people running the news cast, but instead robots. Therefore, people would have to program the robots to tell the world what the issue is, what is going on about it, and what the final outcome is. There would be no time for anyone to step in and voice their opinions. Therefore, the news would be straigh to the point and moving on, allowing no room for anyone to intervene. It’s time we become a more positive world and unfortunately, I believe the news is half the reason why everything is negative. We are constantly seeing the bad that goes on. School shooting, child molesters, and bad car accidents. However, what if we were told about those in a few short sentences but spent more time on the beautiful baby who was adopted into a great family or the homeless man down the street who got a second chance at a better life. If everything became a more positive environment, our world would be a better place.

  27. I want to explore the topic of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a global issue and is essentially modern-day slavery. Many people want to turn their heads and believe that slavery no longer exists when the reality is just the opposite. One of the reasons that human trafficking does exist is because it is such a lucrative business. This really isn’t a big secret as this has been public knowledge for such a long time, and in recent years, this has been “played up” in the entertainment industry as well. So, for the first proposal, I wanted to investigate the business side of human trafficking and learn what drives the economics of modern-day slavery.

I found an article called “Economics of Human Trafficking” published by the International Organization of Migration (IOM).  In the article, an economic model of human trafficking along with all known factors that affect human trafficking are described from both an international and national standpoint. The market for human trafficking is seen as a monopolistic competition that consists of many buyers and sellers dealing with differentiated products- those products being humans.

In this market, the ease of entry and exit suggests a monopoly as the traffickers can enter the market easily if they see made by other traffickers and they can exit easily if they are not making a profit. This is due to three main reasons: 1.) there are many sellers in the market, 2.) there are many buyers that demand human trafficking victims for employment for a variety of reasons, and 3.) the market is characterized by product differentiation. Therefore, the authors conclude that the best economic model that describes this business is monopolistic competition.

However, the death penalty is an extremely controversial topic that does not seem to ever be agreed upon. The country is split in half over this debate because the convicts should be punished, but they do not deserve to be murdered.
I have come up with a modest proposal that I believe will fix the situation of the death penalty. As it is known, the convicts on death row are the most sick, twisted, and dangerous people on this planet. They could injure and kill almost anyone in an instant. That is why I have come up with an idea that will dispose of mostly all the death row inmates without killing them vie lethal injection or electric chair. At the end of every year, beginning on 12:00 a.m. December 28 and lasting to 12:00 a.m. January 1, the 100 most notorious inmates from all around the United States will be gathered in an arena in a useless state: Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico, North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, or New Hampshire. Inside the arena will be primitive weapons and materials to build shelters and armor of some sort. The arena will span 6 square miles and be surrounded by two layers of concrete walls with barbed wire on top. At the sound of a gunshot, the game is on. The inmates will have three days to fight to the death, and the sole survivor will have a sentence reduction. This whole event will be nationally televised with 24/7 monitoring of every criminal and their location within the arena. The sentence reduction can be lessened to a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 30 years. However, there is an exception; depending on the age of the winner, he or she could be released immediately if they are older than 65 years of age. The benefits of this solution are many; state and federal budgets for prisons will decrease because there will not be many death row inmates, the winner has another chance at a better life, and its an entertainment provider for the whole family.
