Equality Act

So,
We are reading 1984. It is now 2021 and the equality act has been passed by the House of Representatives and is now going to Congress. FROM A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE, how might this Act cause a problem?

Here is a link that can help you discern what it is about. You are welcome to use additional resources if you would like

  1. The Equality Act has been an idea in our nation for many years now. It centers around ending discrimination towards sexuality and gender identification. If it is passed, it will amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, and later sexual orientation and gender identity. As Catholics, this proves to challenge our faith and our beliefs. We must recognize what it is and figure out how best we should respond to it.
On February 18, 2021, the Equality Act was officially introduced as being up for a vote to be passed. On February 25, 2021, the Equality Act was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration and a vote. It passed the House with a vote of 224 to 206. If this act is passed, it will end discrimination towards sexuality and gender identification in places of employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system. This legislation recognizes sexual orientation and gender identification as protected clauses under basic civil rights.
With the passing of this legislation in the House of Representatives, and it now being in the Senate, it has sparked several groups to speak out, one of these being the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, or USCCB. They said that the act frames gender as a “social construct.” It is no longer something of science, but something of feelings and opinion. The USCCB also sent a letter to Congress saying that the act is forcing a novel viewpoint towards gender on the general public. Congress is taking away the true and scientific facts about gender and is asking everyone in the country to accept, and live by, people’s feelings. This legislation will force women to share private areas with biological males who identify as transgender females. The same goes for men having to share private areas with biological females who identify as transgender males. Under this act, Washington D.C. is deciding and choosing the morality of our children and all children to come.
As Catholics, we face a challenge because this act will oppress our right to religious freedom and our right to live out our faith and our beliefs. So how do we respond? What do we do? What do we say? We are being faced with a time of uncertainty, and though many of us are not in a position of high authority, we can do one thing, pray. The miracles we have seen through prayer are too big to ignore. What do we do in times of fear and uncertainty? We ask God for help and grace to guide us to do the right thing and make the correct call. We band together as Catholics and defend our faith and our beliefs.
If the Equality Act is officially passed in all areas of Congress and made to be an official legislation, it will not be an easy road for Catholics. That does not mean we give up and silence our hearts. It may seem as though we can’t do much to have our point be heard and respected, but we must never stop trying, we must never let our faith fall dead at our feet.

    1. Great job, Audrey! I think that it is important how you mentioned that the Equality Act tells us to accept and support feelings rather than our religion.

  2. Equality for all is something that everyone should strive to achieve. Catholics are called to love and serve everyone equally, regardless of race or gender. The concept sounds simple, but leave it to a corrupt government to get it all wrong. On February 25, 2021 the Equality Act was passed through the House of Representatives. With the House and Senate having a democratic majority, the act has a reasonable chance to become law. The Equality Act bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity. While it may seem good on the surface, this act betrays God and even becomes a spawn for murder.

The Equality Act calls for a ban to the discrimination of sexual orientation. This entails that anyone would be able to change their gender just because they “feel like it,” and nobody could legally stop them. This turns gender into a social construct, which is not the way God intended it. To make gender just a social construct would be to imply it is a wall that is meant to be broken, something we are meant to be against. But God made gender an integral part of human beings. God made man and woman to work together, and by working together they could glorify God’s mysteries. Man and woman are like hands on a clock; both are needed to tell the time. The big hand can not become the small hand, and vice versa. If that happened, nobody would know what time it really is. Like the hands, male and female work together to reveal the glory of God, and if people change genders, God’s presence will be lost. Without God, society will begin to crumble, and all will be lost. Those who tried to play God were the ones who suffered most in the Bible.

Despite the Equality Act trying to bring everyone together, it would actually make people even more distant. The law also forbids discrimination against pregnancy, which means women would be able to have more legal control of their baby, specifically in abortions. The act would also force tax-payer dollars to be given to abortion clinics. This would allow clinics to perform more abortions than they already do, and at faster rates. The baby inside the womb is a living being, so to have an abortion is to commit murder. The government would be funding a murder machine, that machine would be abortion clinics. Even worse, these murder machines would be funded by the people. This is no different than Nazi-Germany in WWII. The German government supported the murder of Jews, like how the U.S. government now supports abortions. Germany used their people to make products for their concentration camps and the gas chambers within, much like how the labors of Americans will be spent on abortion clinics. The U.S. is supporting a genocide of babies, which is no different than Hitler’s genocide of Jews. A government that supports the murder of babies is not a government for the people.

The Equality Act may seem like it promotes equal rights, but it actually promotes a divided America. These philosophies go against the will of God. The government will betray the God America was founded for, and the God that allowed the country to prosper. God’s design will be forgotten, and soon there will be nothing left. The United States was a land created to find life, liberty, and happiness. America’s support for the genocide on babies is showing that the country is becoming a place of death, containment, and despair.

  3. When looking at the Equality Act from a Catholic perspective, it may seem like a great thing because it targets discrimination. However, when it is observed more closely and one goes to the core of it, many problems and other forms of discrimination can be seen throughout the act. The Equality Act disregards what marriage is truly about, supports that individuals should have the ability to pick and choose their gender, and could force citizens to pay taxes to support abortion. It is also important to note that people label following Church doctrine that goes against this ideology as discrimination.

First of all, this act does not take the sanctity of marriage into account. The USCCB informed that, “Religious adoption agencies would have to match children with same-sex couples or possibly face closure.” This is wrong to force on someone in the name of “fighting discrimination,” when the individual that is made to follow this law is being discrimated against themselves. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that, “The union of man and woman in marriage is a way of imitating in the flesh the Creator's generosity and fecundity: ‘Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.’” God’s will is being completely ignored when a government structure allows this to happen.

Next, the choosing of gender is also included in this. The USCCB said that the Equality Act, “includes dismissing sexual difference and falsely presenting ‘gender’ as only a social construct.” This point of view does not take notice of the fact that individuals are to find their identities through Christ, not by changing or choosing their gender. The Catholic Church teaches that every human being was made perfectly by God, and being able to change something as defining as this is wrong in many ways. It is scientifically and morally wrong to have this capability.

Also, this act supports that citizens, no matter their beliefs, should have to pay taxes so that women are able to have abortions. Catholics are called to support all human life, and it is wrong to exclude certain individuals from this protection. The YouCat says, “Protecting human life is one of the noblest tasks of the State. If a State evades this responsibility, it undermines the foundations of the rule of law.” In this instance, the “State” is directly disregarding this importance. The Equality Act is making it seem like abortion is not discrimination, when it is the worst discrimination of all. It is the discrimination of the unborn, the defenseless, and the voiceless.

Lastly, the Equality Act will be used to discriminate against people of faith. In fact, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops said that, “The Equality Act explicitly exempts itself from the requirements and protections of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (§ 9).” The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 protects everyone’s ability to refuse to do anything that goes against their religious beliefs. As society continues to progress and move further away from God, Christians are being ignored when it pertains to huge decisions, similar to this one. Moreover, even though some groups will be protected from discrimination, Christians will not be included in that.

While it is important to realize that no one should discriminate against the people that this law protects, it is also vital that the freedom to practice religion is protected. The Equality Act fails to protect this right, and no law should promote or tempt individuals in a way that leads them further from God.

  4. Equality has been a struggle in America after many years of striving to accomplish this goal. The Equality Act was passed by the House of Representatives on February 25, 2021. Although the purpose of the act seems to be pushing for American equality, from a Catholic standpoint, it raises several red flags. The Equality Act recognizes and forbids discrimination of sexual orentation and gender identity, which violates what the Catholic Church believe in under God’s commandments. This act is bound to cause turmoil and problems within and surrounding the Catholic Church.
The Equality Act goes against God’s purpose of marriage within the Church. Marriage is an intimate, life-long bond between a man and a woman. This act completely dismisses sexual differences and says that gender is a choice. The Catholic Church firmly believes that we are born as God’s intended gender for each human. It promotes gender changes and makes gender appear as a “social construct” and not one’s true identity. It allows men, who identify as a transgender woman, to compete in womens sports, share restrooms andlocker rooms, and shelters. This puts women in danger and proves obviously wrong if a fifty year old man can use the restroom as a four year girl. Representative Yvette Herrell also states that the Equality Act would force public workers to speak in support of gender transitions even if it is against their beliefs. The Equality Act overrides people’s religious rights and forces them to believe and promote something that their faith is against.
The Equality Act also greatly impacts religious adoption agencies. The act forces them to match children with same sex couples even though their beliefs say otherwise. Many religious adoption agencies have already been shut down because they cannot refuse this. The Equality Act is crushing people’s beliefs and taking away many adoption agencies that are only trying to do good. It is unfair to the Church to have to close facilities because of fear of being closed permanently because of the Equality Act. It is deciding the morality for Catholic people and defies the objective truth instituted by God the Father.
The pro-life movement is also affected by the Equality Act. This act could expand taxpayer funded abortions, causing Catholics against abortion to potentially be paying for someone to get one. If a woman is denied an abortion, this act allows them to claim “pregnancy discrimination.” It may also include an abortion mandate which gives Catholics almost no chance to stop babies from being murdered. Teachers at Catholic colleges could also lose their jobs for teaching the truth about sexuality and marriage.
The Equality Act is causing defeat to the Catholic Church and their beliefs. The Church will have to overcome many obstacles to do as they believe. The act is called the equality act, but it seems to be taking religious equality away from Catholics. As Catholics, we must fight for what is true and right and uphold God’s word. Our faith will not crumble and we must do everything we can to ensure morality.

  5. Equality is a common issue in the United States despite it being one of the foundational beliefs in the country. The recently introduced Equality Act has been passed by the House of Representatives. Not only is this act extremely new, it only took the House roughly a week to decide whether to pass it or not. This event has caused commotion within the country as religious leaders are currently responding. Many bishops have commented on how the new act is detrimental to the beliefs of the Catholic Church on the topics of human life, gender, and sexuality and how the Church feels threatened by the contradicting laws that could possibly come into effect.

From the Catholic point of view, the situation is addressing many controversial debates within the Church and society. One of them includes presenting gender as only a social construct. This idea disregards the biological nature of humans and gives us the chance to choose gender for oneself. Bishops from the USCCB claimed in a letter that the new act could affect their functions to a point that their beliefs are violated. The Church opposes the new ideas such as women in sports having to compete with transgender females that are biologically male. Religious freedom is on the line for Catholics as exercising their beliefs would be considered wrongful, contradicting the constitutional right of freedom of religion.

The pro-life notion is also threatened. The Equality Act is predestined to expand the financial aid given to taxpayer-funded abortion. This is estimated due to the act promises to forbid pregnancy discrimination. The loose statement of “pregnancy” is the act leads Catholics to suggest that abortion could be considered the leading idea within the so called discrimination. Not granting a woman an abortion procedure would be labeled as discriminatory and unjust in the United States.

As Catholics continue to pray for their religious freedom, they are being combatted through legislation not granting religious orders to make claims of defense under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. The Equality Act would be able to overpower any claims made in order to guarantee religious freedom. The Equality Act has a misleading title as it is not campaigning for equality of all citizens. The Act forbids religious freedom which has been established to be a foundation of this country and seen as the promised land for those attempting to escape countries with forced religions. The social issues being addressed within the Equality Act are definitely important to society, but should be dealt with in such a way that does not deprive religions and individuals from their freedom.

  6. Over the past couple of years, many people have been fighting for equality for
race and sex. With 224 people in support to 206 people not supporting it, the House of Representatives passed this bill, the Equality Act, On February 25, 2021. This was only six days after the idea was introduced to these people. Six days is not enough time to talk about, think, and make a decision on something this important. This bill is now going through Congress. The Equality Act can cause a lot of problems for people, including Catholics.
The Equality Act that has been passed through the House of Representatives and is now going through Congress can cause a lot of problems for what God intended. Everyone in this world has a right to life. Too many abortions are going on, and it just is not right. If the Equality Act is fully passed, there is a high possibility that the funding for abortions will go up. This money would be coming from taxpayers, just like you and me. We would not be able to discriminate against pregnant women and whether or not they want to get an abortion. These pregnant women would say that they were being discriminated if they being denied for an abortion. This bill also contains an abortion mandate. This mandate is a “violation of precious rights to life and conscience.” This bill will not help the innocent children that are not getting the chance to live their lives because of abortions, and these number will increase.
The Equality Act will affect what is being taught to students in many different
schools. A president of a Cathoilc college spoke out about what would happen with some of the curriculum. He said that some professors will most likely be told that they can't teach certain things to their students. Some of these topics include, but are not limited to marriage and sexuality. These students would not be able to learn the truth about these important topics. Father Dave Pivonka said that the teachers not being able to teach this truth isn’t ensuring equality for the staff.
The Equality Act is not looking good from a Catholic perspective. This act is
going to affect people’s daily lives in a negative way. It is one of the many things that are affecting and testing our faith. In the article it tells us that this act is punishing many religious groups that do not believe in this stuff.

  7. Equality is a concept that many groups and nations are striving to achieve; however, the current idea of equality may not exactly be true to its definition. Anything that would even slightly punish or oppress religious institutions goes entirely against the meaning of equality. Equality is everyone has the same, human rights, while differences and individuality are celebrated. Sadly, the equality act does not support this, rather it is doing the opposite by separating groups by their differences and proclaiming them “better” than others because they, as a group, are not discriminatory in any way.
In an attempt to bring people together and to make people feel accepted and justified in this interesting time, Congress passed the equality act. This act bans discrimination based on gender identiy, and gaurentees people the right to change their gender and conform to how they feel. In the process, this is tearing people apart because it can make life more confusing and difficult for other people. It can also make certain situations more uncomfortable, especially by allowing individuals to choose what bathroom they wish to use.
This act does not take into account various traditional and sacred elements to human society, and does not recognize that human beings are created perfectly by God, and are in his own image and likeness. God does not make mistakes, and everyone is made the way they are made for a reason, even if the reason is not completely visible. This act also implies that faith and religion are dead to society and give no meaning. This, as a rule is a form of discrimination and furthers true equality.
This act goes against life, and denies its dignity by stating that no matter what you believe, you should be paying taxes that go toward abortions. Since unborn babies are prosecuted, the term equality also does not apply to this situation. It also goes against God and his plan for family and society. Rather than modeling it after love, it is morphing into something formed around the love of self and individual desires.
True equality is something that may never be achieved, and everyone should strive for it. True equality will not prosecute because of religion and a lack of conformity to the loudest voice and strongest force. True equality is a celebration of love and everyone’s individuality no matter what, which is not seen in today’s society. People are put into categories and given certain social titles because of it. It is not equal, nor is it fair.

  8. As a Catholic, we are taught by the Catholic Church that that all of humanity is equal, as all of humanity was created in the image and likeness of God. No one sex or race is above or superior to another. Both sexes are taught to be different and complementary, each having equal dignity to one another. Equality can be misinterpreted by the government as America has been in a struggle trying to maintain the foundation. The Equality Act was passed by the House of Representatives on February 25, 2021 with a vote of 224 to 206. Rather than placing everyone as equals, the act is separating everyone by their differences and putting them into categorized groups. This would also substantially expand the areas to which those discrimination protections apply.
There is much controversy by passing this act as it had high support amongst Democrats and many Republicans opposed to passing it, fearing that it would infringe upon religious objections. More controversy that involves the passing of this act is how it will separate people rather than drawing them together. It is going to be different and almost uncomfortable to see a women be able to walk into a men’s bathroom without it being wrong, and visa vera. Is this what God wanted all along, a human society that doesn’t respect other people’s dignity and values?
With the passing of the Equality Act, does that mean that funding and contributions will go up and support the claims for abortion. This might be the case. Abortions are already to high in terms of the numbers of the innocent babies being killed before the act was passed. The act makes abortions seem like it’s not discriminating, but really, it’s probably the worst discrimination of all. The Catholic Church teaches that life is precious and everyone should given the opportunity to live their life. Even though equality is often sometimes hard to achieve, it must be strived upon everyone as it brings out everyone’s true self while being fair with no discrimination.

  9. The fight for equality has been an ongoing battle in the United States for centuries, and to many, the passing of the Equality Act on February 25, 2021 was another solution in the correct way. However, this could not be anymore incorrect in the perspective of a Catholic. As we have been taught throughout all our years, Catholics are supposed to love and serve each other, just like God loves us. While this concept seems extremely simple in theory, the government took this concept and twisted it to not fit Catholic morals any longer.
The Equality Act bans discrimination based on one’s sexual orientation and gender identity. This means that if oneself “feels like” and wants to identify as a man, even if their biological gender is female, there would be nothing legally able to stop them. This act is also promoting gender being simply a “social construct” rather than gender being the body you were born into. This act also does nothing to protect children, especially young girls, because now, a man who “identifies” as a woman can go in and share a restroom with a little innocent girl and prey on her. It also states that all public workers will have to state that they are in support of gender changes, regardless of if it matches their morals or not.
Another large issue present by the Equality Act is the fact that it has been predicted to expand to enforce that everyone pays extra taxes to support the abortion industry. This, however, is morally wrong and will deeply harm the pro-life movement, especially since women who are Catholic and pro-life would be forced to support the industry.
The Equality Act may seem like this perfect world, but once you scratch the surface and deeply look at it from a Catholic perspective, all the issues with it are clear as day. Every human has the right to practice their beliefs in religion and we cannot stand by and let this act overshadow that right.

    1. I agree that we cannot let this overshadow our right to religious freedom. I like that you pointed out that it forces us to support abortion. Great job Jackie!

  10. Equality is the name of the game in present day America. Everyone is constantly bickering about it, while simultaneously forgetting equality’s sister, unity. These days equality is not just about having equal opportunities and rights, but rather about glossing over the unique differences humans have until the whole race is a muddle or everyone declaring a unique gender and sexuality for themselves unlike any others. Government officials are trying to stay open-minded and accepting and pass petty bills to appease those fighting for equality. However, is this “new” equality, new because it simply disgraces the equality our ancestors rightfully fought for, a good thing?
The Government is supposed to be separate from religion. This means that religion should never be a reason behind passing or not passing a law/policy. The Equality Act that was recently passed certainly does not follow the Catholic religion. However, it does offend it. By taking the side opposing religion, the government has involved itself in religion.
The Catholic church shares and upholds the standard of marriage and vocation. Following the Bible, where it says that each individual person was created with purpose and thought, it is made clear that God makes no mistakes. Because this Equality Act goes far enough beyond suggesting that possibly God made a mistake in creation to encourage today’s youth to think that it happens often. This act says everyone should go with the identity they feel most comfortable with. God gave every individual an identity for a reason, to try and change this is going against God’s will.
Many Bishops in the Catholic Church were concerned that this act also shames Christians. If anyone wants to evangelize for Jesus or speak the Gospel, they’re sharing bigotry and manipulating listeners. A Godly marriage is not normal anymore. In fact, they’re offensive to some. The Bishops worry that this equality movement will destroy the American youth’s idea of marriage.
The act destroys the foundation of Christianity, to follow a vocation in Jesus’s name. Christians are no longer allowed to share the truth, a censorship in the media fueled by Satan. Those strong enough in Spirit to share it anyways face slander, hatred, and potentially legal action. Now, because of this act, anyone can be anything, but Catholic.

  11. Treating people with love and respect is what Catholics strive to do. The Equality act is an act that congress passed that protects gender identity under the civil rights law and doesn’t allow discrimination. Many will say this is good because it will give respect to those people, but they are already receiving respect and love from the Catholic people. This new law limits religious freedom which greatly affects the Catholic Church and the organizations founded within the church.
The Equality Act was officially passed on Feb 25, 2021. It stated that gender was a social construct and anyone that wishes to object to that construct are protected against discrimination as are those who have a different sexual orientation. This is extremely harmful to religious and nonreligious people. The conference has even warned that it will “punish” those who will not conform.
The effects of the Equality Act will be widespread. If a male predator wants to use a women’s restroom he will be able to share the same space as a young female child, making women even more vulnerable. The new law will even force churches and church establishments to allow men into the women’s restroom and locker rooms. Schools can even become unsafe with these new laws. It even censors teachers into not being able to teach the truth to children about sexual orientation and gender identity. Adoption center even have to close because of their refusal to comply with paring children with same sex couples.
The government is beginning to censor the views of Catholics and other religions. Having a different view is now not allowed by law. The truth is being silenced because of what others believed. If a law was put into place about many of the Catholic views it would be immediately opposed because of the respect of others beliefs. The new act is disrespectful and forcefully making people teach and follow something they don’t believe in.

  12. There is a new bill being passed in the house. The bill is one that will change many things regarding mainly the discrimination of thoes who have different sexual orientations and gene set identities. This sounds like a good thing in theory, no one should be treated different based on identity or orientation, but it does come with some baggage.
The equality act is another way morality is being screwed in today’s world. From a religious standpoint the new act poses many problems. The church now feels threatened by the laws that now prohibit them from discriminating same sex couples. No longer will catholic based adoption centers be able to turn away same sex couples wishing to adopt simply based on their religious beliefs. It threatens the religious freedom all people have. Adoption centers are running the risks of being shit down if they refuse.
Another topic addressed in the equality act is that it allows transgender women to participate in women’s sporting events. This goes against the biological nature of humans that states that one can not change their gender. The equality act also calls for some taxes to go to abortion clinics. This is wrong because it forces Catholics to pay for something they have no belief in. It restricts catholics from practicinf their faith.
Unfortunately refusing to allow a woman to have an abortion would be labeled as discriminatory which is not true. While thoes who the act verifies celebrate the church is in a tight spot. With religious freedom being threatened Catholics have little to no place to turn to. The equality act would be a danger to morality and religious freedom.

  13. The Equality Act was one of the bills that Congress has already passed during President Biden’s first term. Not only does this Act take in effect that of people of different sexual orientation, but it also amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964. People say that this act is to have equality in activity, but who is being discriminated against? People often blur the line between being discriminated against and how they feel. Many women say that they are not being paid the same as white men, but how does this make sense when a majority of white men do jobs that women do not. People also say more men are in places of power, but you could say the same to how more men are in prison or that more men commit violent crimes. People hyperextend these statistics to show how they are being “discriminated” against. The real people being discriminated against are white men. White men are being rejected from colleges at a higher rate because people want their colleges to be more diverse because they get more money. The Equality Act is shaped towards the people of the gay community. This bill, however is good for them, hurts people of religion that oppose gay people. This bill says that people have to confide with people of the gay community and protects their rights by harming the people’s rights of religion and freedom of belief.

  15. The Equality Act, which is in the process of being passed in the United States, basically states that American people are no longer entitled to their own opinions. It was introduced on February 18th, and passed by the House only six days later. It is now being widely talked about among primarily politicians and theologians. The Act is an attempt to suppress discrimination and create a safer environment for citizens who previously felt “attacked.” Despite how good that sounds, the effects that will follow will cause much more hatred and controversy than before.
By passing the Equality Act, people will no longer be able to speak out against things that they feel are wrong. This should be especially scary from a Catholics perspective. Catholics believe in unity with a man or woman, who then has a child(ren). This is the most basic format for any family, and it’s unable to be defended. Americans are no longer able to speak out against gender transitioning, marriage between homosexuals, or abortion. The Equality Act states that speaking out against these ideas is considered incriminating because these people are “protected.” This should be hard for Catholics to fathom, considering it is rooted in faith that people of good moral standing are not to stand by when there is injustice, or wrongdoing, but rather confidently intervene. The Equality Act prohibits anyone from standing up for what they believe in. It will be a huge step in the wrong direction if this Act is passed and enforced in the United States.
In a worst case scenario, The Equality Act is one step closer to socialist ideologies taking over the democratic and just America we know today. If we don’t stand up for something, we will fall for anything. The rules and regulations will keep pushing further until an ultimate goal of total control is achieved. Once we give an inch, they will take a mile. This pattern of slowly interwinding radical ideas into government has ruined countries throughout history, and it could be happening right before our eyes. The ability to express individuality through our faith is rooted in Catholicism. We are called to protect life, speak up for those without a voice, and guide people towards a morally better life. The Equality Act takes away Catholics ability to do their job.
